Lab Technician

POSITION DESCRIPTION Performs laboratory tests to determine the chemical and/or physical characteristics of in process materials. Determines next steps for alloying finished products. Compiles data for trend analysis while driving continuous improvement as a support structure for production departments. This position reports the Laboratory Supervisor. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Operates laboratory equipment and instruments such as: Arc-Spark emission Spectrometer, Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrometer, LECO, X-ray Fluorescence Analyzer, pH meter, analytical balance and other equipment. Prepares chemical solutions according to standard formulas, using proper techniques in measuring volumes of liquids and weights of solids and liquids. Analyze chemical composition of in-process material and issue instructions for completion of the alloying process. Assist in the tracking of the refinery production schedule. Records results of finished product testing into corporate SAP computer system. Tests environmental samples to aid in the determination of the disposition of wastes/effluents. Compiles data for trend analysis to support all departments. Complies with all environmental, health, safety, quality systems and housekeeping programs. Conducts himself or herself in a professional manner. Performs other duties, as assigned, or authorized by laboratory management. PRE-HIRE REQUIREMENTS Intermediate computer skills. 4-year degree in chemistry or other related science preferred or related applicable experience. Excellent interpersonal communications skills; written and verbal. POST-HIRE TRAINING REQUIREMENTS Safety and Environmental training applicable to the job. Job instructional training. Continuous improvement and data analysis training ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 training PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 60 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of his job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is regularly exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock. The employee occasionally works in outside weather condition and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
