Job Summary The Histotechnologist provides advanced technical skills and knowledge in the preparation of tissue specimens to support diagnosis using various complex methodologies and histological procedures. The role requires familiarity with all laboratory policies and procedures; the ability to analyze and troubleshoot quality and instrumentation issues; and assistance with inventory maintenance. Key Qualifications BS degree in Biological, Health or Social Sciences, or a directly related field. Minimum two (2) years of histology experience. HTL (ASCP) certification required. Minimum Qualifications (Histology Technician) Associate degree or equivalent; no experience required. Certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) in Histology (HT) or obtained within 12 months of hire. Preferred Qualifications Completion of a Histology Technician program or equivalent education. Essential Job Functions Assist with processing of specimens, data entry, and documentation of quality control. Perform manual techniques and operate instruments in accordance with protocols and instrument guidelines, e.g., embedding and microtomy (both paraffin and frozen sections involving the use of automatic tissue processors, balances, pH meters, etc.). Select, perform, and monitor staining procedures required for specific diagnoses, e.g., evaluation of adequacy of reagents and stain selection, utilization of control materials, monitoring of stained preparations. Mount coverslips on slides and label as appropriate. Operate and monitor laboratory equipment in accordance with equipment manuals and laboratory policies. Maintain a physically clean, organized work area free of safety hazards; dispose of all biohazardous and chemically hazardous materials properly; maintain adequate inventory and order supplies as needed. Prepare solutions and reagents in accordance with standard procedures. Adhere to internal controls established for the department. Adhere to safety protocols in each laboratory area; assist in operation and maintenance of the laboratory under accrediting agencies’ guidelines. Perform frozen sections and participate in the daily preparation of paraffin sections for staining of patient tissue, including special stains and immunohistochemical stains. Serve as a bench instructor for histology training programs and new staff, establishing competency. Participate in process improvement activities, quality control and QC analyses; attend system Quality Council meetings as requested. Provide guidance, troubleshooting, and take appropriate action to maintain quality. Perform advanced and specialized histology techniques and troubleshooting as needed.
