Job Description This position is only open to VTA employees who are represented by the local Amalgamated Transit Union, 265. About Light Rail Vehicle Maintenance Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) Maintenance is located at the Guadalupe Light Rail Division. LRV Maintenance is responsible for timely and reliable maintenance, preventive maintenance, inspections, repair and servicing of light rail vehicles and service equipment. Definition Under general supervision, the Lead Maintenance Worker-LRT performs unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance and repair of light rail stations, terminal buildings, restrooms, park and ride lots, landscaping, fences, guardrails, handicapped lifts, and other trackside areas and to provide lead supervision and training to Maintenance Workers. Classification Bargaining Unit: ATU Essential Job Functions Job Responsibilities: Performs maintenance of trackside structures, including cleaning walls, windows, floors, and restrooms; Performs semi-skilled repairs of structures, fencing, guardrails, and handicapped lifts; Inspects and reports problems with escalators and elevators; Keeps park and ride lots and other trackside areas clean and free of litter; Plants, fertilizes, pull weeds, waters, prunes, trims, mows, and maintains trackside landscaping; Sprays herbicides; Performs manual labor; Operates, services, and maintains gardening, janitorial, and related tools and equipment; Performs work on ladders and scaffolds; Drives light trucks and automobiles; Maintains simple records; Supervises safe work practices; Provides lead supervision and training to Maintenance Workers; Assesses employee compliance with VTA rules, regulations, and work standards; Reports employees attendance and other irregularities to management; Participates in disciplinary proceedings on behalf of management; Operates computer for related data input and retrieval; Performs related work as required. Minimum Qualifications Qualifications and Experience: Possession of a valid California driver's license. Two (2) years of experience in custodial and general maintenance work. In accordance with Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements, all job applicants selected for appointment to this safety-sensitive position are subject to pre-employment drug testing. A final job applicant will be tested for five prohibited drugs (and their metabolites): Cocaine, PCP, Amphetamines, Marijuana, and Opiates. During employment, employees holding safety-sensitive positions (Bus Drivers) are subject to random, reasonable suspicion, post accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing. In accordance with Federal Regulation 49 CFR Part 40.25, VTA is required to obtain all information regarding any positive drug test results, any alcohol test results of .04 or above, any refusal to test, and any records of evaluation and/or treatment resulting from such tests from current, previous, and potential employers for the past two years. You will be required to complete and sign a "Drug and Alcohol Background Check Consent Form" if you are offered this position. Candidates will be required to be fingerprinted for the purpose of obtaining "Summary Criminal History Conviction Information" from state and federal record agencies. Supplemental Information Knowledge Of Methods, materials, safety practices, tools, and equipment used in custodial, groundskeeping and general maintenance work; Ability To Perform semi-skilled maintenance and repair of facilities; Operate and make minor repairs to gardening and janitorial tools; Operate motor vehicles; Perform physical labor; Follow oral and written instructions; Perform computer-related functions that allow for data input and retrieval; Establish and maintain cooperative working relations with those contacted in the course of business; Supervise and train maintenance workers. Willingness To Evaluate employees adherence to district rules and regulations and to report irregularities to management; Work odd and irregular hours. CHANGE OF CLASS (COC) PROCESS Please note: Positions are filled based on operational needs. If there are not any vacancies, we will not process any applications for that position. TESTING AND RESCHEDULING Requests based on religious holiday or belief shall include a letter from the candidate's religious leader and must be received at least three (3) business days prior to the examination session date. Requests based on jury duty shall include the jury duty document and must be received at least three (3) business days prior to the examination session date. Requests based on a candidate's illness shall include a doctor's certification and must be received no later than two (2) business days after the scheduled examination session date. Requests based on VTA business necessity shall include a request from the candidate's department head and must be received no later than two (2) business days after the examination session date. Requests based on the death of an immediate family member shall include proof of the death and must be received no later than three (3) business days after the date of the examination session date. Requests based on military commitment shall include a letter from the candidates commanding officer, or designee, and must be received no later than three (3) business days after the examination session date. Requests based on reasons other than the above (including having made a substantial financial commitment to a vacation) shall not be approved. Candidates' requests to take a late test will be reviewed by the Human Resource Analyst for compliance with the criteria listed above. The selection process shall not be stayed for candidates who are taking a late test. Candidates who do not pass the examination may reapply forty-five (45) calendar days after the initial written examination. If the candidate does not pass the second time, the candidate may reapply ninety (90) calendar days after the second examination. If the candidate does not pass the third time, the candidate may not reapply until a new recruitment is opened. The waiting period for all performance testing is six (6) months. Social Security taxes will be deducted from each employee's bi-weekly salary.
