Environmental Engineer

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has an exciting opportunity for a Wastewater Engineer who demonstrates technical skills, customer focus and is a detail-oriented team player to join the Wastewater Engineering team to help protect Iowa’s water quality. Responsibilities As a Wastewater Engineer, you will play a key role in supporting the engineering team to protect the environment and public health. Your duties include: Reviewing construction permit applications, overseeing wastewater treatment and collection system infrastructure projects, and approving engineering planning reports, antidegradation alternatives analyses, plans and specifications. Approving construction permits for non-funded wastewater projects and some projects funded through the Clean Water State Revolving Fund (CWSRF). Managing Municipal wastewater projects such as facility plan approvals, ensuring conformance with design standards, regulations and siting requirements. Coordinating with cities, consultants, field offices, Waste Load Allocation staff, NPDES staff and funding agencies. Performing site visits, inspections, and preparing detailed reports. Managing project schedules and using web-based tracking systems for project information. Processing CWSRF projects including technical review and permitting, conducting construction inspections, and compiling reports. Essential Functions Apply state design standards, engineering principles and practices in wastewater treatment and conveyance design and operation. Review technical, administrative, and regulatory documents to assure compliance with permitting rules and requirements. Read and analyze technical documents and information for projects. Perform detailed technical reviews and prepare comments for projects. Perform complex civil and environmental engineering calculations. Utilize knowledge of civil and environmental engineering principles to perform duties. Qualifications Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering (Civil or Environmental preferred). A degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering is preferred. Valid Iowa Class C driver’s license. Preference for candidates with related work experience in design and/or design review of wastewater/water collection and treatment systems or an advanced degree in wastewater engineering. Experience in wastewater engineering, including 6 months’ experience, 12 semester hours, or a combination of both in the relevant discipline (Civil, Environmental, Sanitary).
