County of Los Angeles
FIRE DEPARTMENT
Type of Recruitment: OPEN COMPETITIVE - FIRE EMERGENCY Exam Number: 33772A-FR Applications will be accepted from Friday, May 15, 2026 at 8:00 a.m. (PT) until Friday, May 29, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. (PT). All applications must be received before 5:00 p.m. (PT) on Friday, May 29, 2026, to be accepted. The Los Angeles County Fire Department is seeking qualified candidates to fill emergency Fire Prevention Engineering Assistant I vacancies related to this unprecedented natural disaster. Under the emergency order, applicants who meet the requirements may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with an opportunity for permanent County employment.RESPONSIBILITIES
Conduct plan reviews and issue approvals for moderately difficult architectural building plans (e.g., small public assemblies, business/mercantile occupancies, single-family and multi-family dwellings, non-high piled storage commercial industrial buildings, schools, etc.) for fire life safety requirements (e.g., fire flow, hydrant location, vehicular access) by reviewing applicable codes (building, fire, residential, NFPA standards, etc.) and comparing submitted plans (paper and computerized) using applicable software programs (EPIC LA, etc.) to ensure compliance with building codes. Interact with and assist members of the public, private businesses, and government agencies in a professional/effective manner to inform applicants of code requirements and/or facilitate the permit process in person or using electronic communications. Review proposed tract and parcel maps to determine fire hydrant locations; reflect new hydrant installations; and verify Land Development Unit’s fire hydrant and fire department vehicular access requirements by using maps (Departmental GIS maps, online maps, etc.) and applicable software programs. Explain and interpret fire prevention engineering requirements imposed on projects submitted for review by architects, engineers, developers or owners by communicating with applicants and providing a list of corrections to ensure compliance with applicable codes (building plans, tract and parcel maps, occupancy change of use, conditional use permits, zone changes, etc.). Attend meetings with higher level Fire Department staff and local government officials (County/City, Water Departments, Building/Planning Department officials, etc.) and applicants to respond to inquiries or disputes. Consult with supervisor or higher-level staff for guidance on difficult or challenging projects or alternative methods of code compliance to facilitate resolutions by written and/or verbal communication. Prepare reports and maintain project files (building plans, land development files, and maps) by inputting data and information from electronic and paper sources for each project to maintain accurate records. Conduct field inspections (e.g., flow tests, site verifications) by visiting project sites, witnessing or performing flow tests, and verifying test results to confirm project requirements are being met. Perform mathematical calculations to determine building area justifications, tank sizes, occupant load, available fire flow for public and private fire protection systems, etc. using calculators, architectural/engineering scales, and software programs.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
