Capitol Security Officer: Protecting Congress

Overview The United States Capitol Police (USCP) safeguards the Congress, Members of Congress, employees, visitors, and Congressional buildings and grounds from crime, disruption, and terrorism. The USCP protects and secures Congress so it can fulfill its constitutional and legislative responsibilities in a safe, secure, and open environment. Eligibility Requirements Must have completed one of the following training programs: FLETC UPTP; FLETA accredited military or other equivalent police training program; or CBP training programs (USBPI or CBPOPT). Certificate must be included with application. Must be a current law enforcement officer with 9 months of experience after training at time of application, and 52 weeks of experience at time of appointment. Must be employed outside of USCP at the time of application. Must be a United States citizen. Must meet position age requirements. Must possess and maintain a valid REAL ID U.S. driver's license and evidence of responsible driving in the last one year. Male applicants must be registered for Selective Service. Travel for hiring assessments and training is at applicant's expense. Must successfully complete a full field background investigation, polygraph, medical assessment, criminal, credit, and tax checks. Must successfully complete all required training and a probationary period. Must be in a full and unrestricted duty status at the time of application and appointment. Examination Phase Psychological – Candidates complete a battery of psychological assessments and a clinical interview. The exam lasts approximately four to six hours and is conducted online with a desktop or laptop computer, camera, and microphone. Medical – Candidates must fast prior to the exam to determine fitness for the functional requirements of the job. Polygraph – Used to confirm information obtained through the selection process. Full background investigation will be conducted to verify employment history, references, criminal and credit history, and academic records. Age and Service Requirements Sworn officer positions have retirement requirements: separate by age 57, increased to 59. Applicants must be at least 21 and ordinarily not older than 37, with maximum entry age increased to 39 (or 40 if turning 40 in the same month). Lateral transfer candidates older than 39 must meet additional service rules so that combined federal law enforcement service equals at least 20 years by age 59. An SF-50 may be required for older applicants. Additional Qualification Criteria Education – High School diploma or GED required. Valid Driver's License – REAL ID U.S. driver's license, not revoked or suspended for the past year. Criminal History Check – Comprehensive check of the past ten years. Misdemeanor domestic violence convictions disqualify. Credit Check – Must not be in default or delinquent on any federal guaranteed student loans. Selective Service Registration – Male applicants must register; female exempt. Fingerprint Check – Submitted to FBI. Background Investigation – Must complete all components of USCP full field background investigation.
