ABOUT THE ROLE

To continue advancing the impact we have across the communities we serve, Commonpoint is hiring a Senior Camp Counselor situated within the Camp Department. The Camp Department plays a vital role in creating engaging, safe, and enriching summer experiences for youth through structured programming, social‑emotional development, and community‑building activities. The individual hired as Assistant Camp Director will support the Camp Director in overseeing all aspects of camp operations, including staff supervision, program implementation, safety compliance, and daily logistics. This leadership role plays a key part in ensuring a high‑quality camp experience for campers, families, and staff. This role reports directly to the Camp Director. Across the agency, our seasonal and part‑time staff play a crucial role in driving our initiatives forward by supporting daily operations, program delivery, and organizational goals. Agency Expectations Support agency initiatives by carrying out assigned duties accurately and efficiently, while following established processes and contributing to basic data collection, reporting, or documentation as required. Use agency resources responsibly by following established procedures, safeguarding equipment and materials, and/or supporting cost‑effective operations. Work effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and cross‑department teams to ensure clear communication, timely task completion, and a positive, respectful work environment. Follow all safety protocols, policies, and procedures to maintain a safe work environment for staff, partners, and the public, and promptly report concerns or incidents. Role Expectations Support the Camp Director in the overall management and daily operations of camp Supervise Unit Heads and staff, providing ongoing coaching, feedback, and support Ensure accurate daily attendance, headcounts, and overall camper accountability across all units Monitor and maintain proper staff‑to‑camper ratios at all times Oversee daily schedules, transitions, and program flow to ensure smooth operations Ensure all groups are prepared for daily activities, including swim, trips, and special events Support behavior management across camp, addressing escalations and ensuring consistency Serve as a point of contact for parent communication, concerns, and incident follow‑up Ensure all safety protocols, emergency procedures, and compliance requirements are followed Assist with staff scheduling, coverage, and break management Help lead staff meetings, trainings, and professional development sessions Monitor staff performance and uphold expectations around professionalism, engagement, and supervision Assist with onboarding, training, and evaluating staff Support special events, trips, and camp‑wide programming Maintain strong communication with the Camp Director regarding operations, challenges, and needs Foster a positive, organized, and team‑oriented camp culture Qualifications & Key Attributes Minimum Qualifications Must be at least 21 years old Extensive experience working with children in a camp, school, or youth program setting Previous leadership or supervisory experience required Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills Demonstrated ability to manage staff, operations, and camper behavior effectively Ability to multitask and problem‑solve in a fast‑paced environment Dependable, professional, and able to lead by example Comfortable participating in all camp activities, including outdoor programming and daily swim Ability to oversee multiple groups, ensure safety, and maintain accurate records Must pass background check and complete all required onboarding and compliance trainings. Preferred Qualifications Previous experience as an Assistant Director, Camp Director, or similar leadership role Background in education, psychology, recreation, or a related field CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain prior to the start of camp) Experience working with diverse populations and supporting social‑emotional development Strong conflict resolution and staff management skills Experience with scheduling, program planning, and camp operations Ability to take initiative, lead independently, and make informed decisions in high‑pressure situations Key Attributes Consistently shows up prepared, follows through on assigned responsibilities, and meets expectations within established timelines. Responds effectively to changing priorities, learns new tasks quickly, and applies feedback to improve performance. Compensation & Benefits Commonpoint offers competitive base salaries benchmarked against comparable nonprofit organizations in the New York metropolitan area. Salaries are determined based on internal and external equity, as well as each position’s scope, qualifications, and organizational impact. We believe in compensating staff fairly and consistently, ensuring that all salary decisions align with our mission‑driven commitment to equity and transparency. To maintain fairness across the organization, salary offers are set according to established salary bands and are not subject to negotiation. New hires typically start near the beginning of the salary range to allow for growth based on performance, professional development, and tenure. Seasonal Salary/Rate: $6,000 - $7,000 | Starting Salary: $6,000 Working Conditions Consider the following: Environment, such as an office or outdoors.
