Asbestos Enforcement Inspector

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) protects public health and the environment by supplying clean drinking water, collecting and treating wastewater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. We deliver 1.1 billion gallons of high‑quality drinking water per day to 8.3 million New York City residents and more than 1 million people in Upstate New York, and we collect and treat an average of 1.3 billion gallons of wastewater per day. Responsibilities Conduct safety and health investigations to ensure compliance with Asbestos Rules and Regulations. Identify and evaluate potential hazards related to egress, fire protection systems, passive fire protection system removal, and other fire hazards. Prepare detailed inspection reports of field activities, including worksite dimensions, diagrams, photographs, and asbestos samples. Interpret laboratory reports, review air sampling reports, issue Notice of Violations, prepare case files and evidence, and provide testimony at Environmental Control Board Hearings and trials. Respond to public reports and concerns, and address emergency situations. Conduct field and office audits of Asbestos Assessment Reports, ATRU, ACP 7s, and perform joint inspections and investigations with other City, State, and Federal Agencies. Minimum Qualifications A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university including or supplemented by 28 semester credits in industrial hygiene, environmental health science, occupational health science and/or safety engineering; or. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university including or supplemented by 28 semester credits in the physical or natural sciences, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, environmental engineering, chemical engineering and/or toxicology and one year of satisfactory full‑time experience in the identification, evaluation and control of health and safety hazards; or. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and two years of satisfactory full‑time work experience as described in the second item; or. A combination of education and experience that is equivalent to the coursework and/or experience described in items 1, 2, and 3. Semester credits from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience (7 semester credits = 6 months of experience, up to 28 credits for sciences; 7 semester credits = 3 months of experience, up to 28 credits for engineering fields). All candidates must hold a baccalaureate degree. License Requirements A valid Motor Vehicle Driver License issued in the State of New York, maintained for the duration of employment. Preferred Skills Ability to climb stairs and ladders and engage in extensive walking at facilities being inspected, including those under construction and renovation, while following all mandated safety procedures.
