Food Service Assistant

Description 1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.1 The purpose of this standard procedure is to outline the duties, responsibilities, authority, reporting relationships, and measures of performance for the position of food service assistant. 2.0 BASIC FUNCTION 2.1 The basic function of the food service assistant is to plan and prepare healthy meals for children following the Child and Adult Care Food Program guidelines, complete all cleaning task necessary, assist in implementation of all required documentation, and adhere to all guidelines set for by state and local agencies. 3.0 REQUIREMENTS: 3.1 Education: Required: High School Diploma 3.2 Experience: A preferred minimum of 2 years’ experience working in the food industry. No minimum experience required. 3.3 Skill, Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of basic health and food guidelines. Ability to prepare quality meals and snacks. Ability to supervise and communicate with adult consumers employed as a food service assistant. 3.4 Physical: Ability to actively participate in kitchen environment including cooking, cleaning, and documentation. Ability to communicate effectively with families, staff, supervisors, and public. Ability to drive to locations, physically observe and perform all childcare operations, listen and actively participate in communicating effectively with employees, customers and public. Ability to bend, reach, grasp, manipulate objects, pull/push, stoop, kneel, crouch, twist, and lift and/or carry 20 pounds or exert up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 50 pounds of force occasionally to move objects or human bodies, with or without the use of adaptive equipment. 3.5 Mental: Basic math skills, as well as good reading, writing and spelling ability to communicate clearly and effectively in the English language. Ability to work in active environments. 3.6 Working Conditions: Office, kitchen, and classroom areas. Traveling includes deliveries, meetings, conferences, and training opportunities. Must possess a vehicle, driver's license, and active insurance coverage. 4.0 REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS 4.1 The food service assistant will report to the food service manager. 5.0 AUTHORITY 5.1 To complete on-site inspections when the food services director is not available with appropriate staff from governing state and local agencies. 5.2 To submit purchase orders as directed by the food service director for budgeted expenditures to the Vice President of Easter Seals West Kentucky. 5.3 To submit maintenance request forms to the appropriate staff member. 6.0 RESPONSIBILITIES 6.1 To assist in planning, creating, developing, and producing quality meals and snacks for the children and adults enrolled at Easter Seals West Kentucky. 6.2 To assist the food services manager to ensure all required documentation is completed, accurate, and submitted within the regulated timelines to the appropriate agencies. 7.0 PRINCIPAL DUTIES 7.1 Prepares daily nutritious, healthy, and tasteful meals and snacks for children, adults, and staff in at Easter Seals West Kentucky within the time frames established by the food service director. 7.2 Ensures that the kitchen environment and equipment are clean, sanitary, functioning properly, and meets all safety regulations. 7.3 Attends required training and continuing education activities as regulated by the Child and Adult Care Food Program and the child development center. 7.4 To assist in planning, developing, and purchasing weekly/monthly supplies including food and paper products with approved purchase orders that are within budgeted amount. 7.5 All other duties as assigned.
