Maintenance Technician II Opportunity

The City of Tumwater is offering a career advancement opportunity for Maintenance Technician I employees who are ready to progress to the Maintenance Technician II level within the Utility Maintenance series. Maintenance Technician II employees perform skilled maintenance, repair, and operational work within their assigned crew area, with increased independence and responsibility. This includes applying technical knowledge in the field, supporting the safe and efficient completion of work assignments, and contributing to the overall reliability and performance of City infrastructure systems.

This opportunity is open to employees from all maintenance crews, including but not limited to Streets, Sanitary Sewer, Stormwater, and Water. Selected candidates will demonstrate readiness to perform work with greater autonomy, apply established procedures and standards, and contribute to team operations through strong work practices, communication, and collaboration. This recruitment reflects the City's commitment to employee development and provides a clear pathway for progression within the Maintenance Technician series.

Essential Job Duties

Maintenance Technician II assignments vary by crew. The following outlines representative work performed within each functional area.

Sanitary Sewer Crew

• Perform skilled maintenance, repair, and inspection of sanitary sewer systems, including mains, manholes, lift stations, and related infrastructure
• Operate specialized equipment (e.g., vactor trucks, CCTV inspection equipment) to support inspection and preventative maintenance
• Troubleshoot and resolve routine and moderately complex system issues to maintain reliable wastewater service
• Respond to emergency calls, including sewer backups and system failures
• Document work activities and support regulatory compliance

Stormwater Crew

• Perform maintenance, repair, and inspection of stormwater systems, including catch basins, pipelines, and drainage structures
• Support water quality efforts through system cleaning and maintenance activities
• Identify and address drainage issues to reduce flooding risks
• Operate equipment to maintain system functionality and respond to storm events
• Document work activities and support environmental compliance

Water Crew

• Perform skilled maintenance and repair of water distribution systems, including mains, valves, hydrants, and service lines
• Support installation and replacement of water infrastructure
• Identify and assist in resolving leaks, pressure issues, and system deficiencies
• Respond to emergency water system issues, including main breaks
• Support water quality and safety standards through proper procedures and documentation

Streets Crew

• Perform maintenance and repair of streets, sidewalks, rights-of-way, and traffic control infrastructure
• Operate equipment to support roadway maintenance, including asphalt repair and surface treatments
• Install and maintain traffic control devices such as signs and pavement markings
• Respond to roadway hazards and emergency conditions
• Support safe and effective traffic control in work zones

Shared Responsibilities

In addition to crew-specific assignments, all Maintenance Technician II positions share the following responsibilities:

• Perform work with increased independence using established procedures, standards, and safety practices
• Operate tools and equipment safely and effectively
• Support team operations through communication, coordination, and reliability
• Identify issues and contribute to problem-solving and continuous improvement
• Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and system conditions
• Respond to after-hours and emergency call-outs as required

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Routinely works independently and completes assigned work without direct supervision.
• Demonstrates a strong working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and utility systems relevant to assigned crew functions.
• Proficient in the use of inspection, diagnostic, and repair tools and equipment.
• Holds additional required or preferred credentials, including both general and crew-specific certifications.
• Begins mentoring, coaching, and sharing technical knowledge with Maintenance Technician I staff.
• Works under general supervision and is trusted to perform tasks independently.
• Independently completes work orders, inspections, and related documentation accurately and timely.
• Performs work safely, consistently follows established safety guidelines, and uses required PPE without direction in routine situations.
• Completes assigned work in a timely manner, generally meeting or exceeding established deadlines.
• Demonstrates the ability to independently set up and maintain appropriate traffic control zones.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

Work is performed in a variety of field, operational, or service environments, depending on assignment. Duties may involve exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, traffic, equipment, uneven terrain, and other operational hazards. Work may require prolonged standing or walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, reaching, and heavy lifting, as well as the operation of tools, equipment, or vehicles. Some assignments may involve working in confined or restricted spaces.

Benefits

The following is an overview of the benefits available to the employees of the City of Tumwater Teamster's local no. 252:

• Vacation: Regular full-time City employees earn 96 hours of paid annual leave during their first year of employment. This rate is increased to a maximum of 184 hours per year, depending upon length of service.
• Sick Leave: Sick leave is accrued by regular full-time City employees at the rate of 8 hours per month.
• Holidays: Most City employees receive 11 paid holidays (at 8 hours each) annually, one of which is a floating holiday.
• Retirement: Eligible City employees are mandatory members of the State of Washington Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). New employees have a choice between PERS Plan 2 and PERS Plan 3. Both the City and the employee contribute to the system. The state retirement system provides retirement benefits and also benefits for people who are disabled. Employees leaving City service prior to retirement may withdraw their total contribution with interest.
• Teamsters Trust Retirement Program: Under the current Teamster's contract, the City pays a contribution of $3.65 for each hour for which compensation is paid into the Western Conference of Teamsters Trust Pension Fund.
• Deferred Compensation: Employees may participate in by making employee contributions to this tax-deferred retirement account.
