Nuclear Services Engineer Intern (Part-time)

Position Description & Qualifications

Serco is seeking a self-motivated part-time Nuclear Services Engineer Intern interested in nuclear power plant design, operation, safety, and regulatory compliance.

The Serco Nuclear Services Division (NSD) has a long history supporting the commercial nuclear power industry with plant operational challenges related to design basis and risk-informed accident analyses. Our work commonly spans a spectrum ranging from hydraulic and chemical corrosion testing to Licensing Application Requests and representation of power plant operators at Nuclear Regulatory Commission audits and public meetings. Our small team of experienced professionals apply their skills in CAD modeling, Computational Fluid Dynamics, thermodynamics, structural load analysis, chemical corrosion, radiation dispersion and transport, risk analysis, and programming to demonstrate and achieve plant safety within an evolving regulatory framework. NSD is expanding to pursue new opportunities in nuclear power development/deployment represented by Small Modular / Micro Reactors and recent aggressive investment in baseload power stations worldwide.

In this role, you will:

• Work in a small team environment assisting with one or more of the following:

• Development of containment structure CAD models

• Regulatory document research

• Hydraulic flow loss calculations

• CFD simulation

• Debris generation analysis

• Development of hydraulic test specifications

• Uncertainty analysis and statistical error propagation

To be successfull in this role, you will have:

• Completed Junior-level course work in an accredited Engineering degree program (or equivalent). Course work should include Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Calculus, Differential Equations.

• Experience with CAD modeling (AutoDesk, ProE, or similar), computer programming and engineering physics simulation (Matlab, Python, or similar).

• The ability to work independently and creatively while effectively communicating findings, challenges, and alternative ideas in a group environment.

• Good oral and written communication skills supported by experience/training in Technical Writing and presentation software.

• Demonstrated interests such as community activities, music, hobbies, health and fitness, volunteer work, etc.; and/or extracurricular work experience demonstrating professional development needed to attain personal goals.

Additional desired experience and skills:

• Strong mathematics skills and training (calculus-based statistics preferred).

• Familiarity with Generic Safety Issue-191 preferred.
