Liability Claims Manager

The Liability Claims Manager is responsible for managing Troon's non-employment liability claims and outside litigation from first notice through resolution. Reporting to the Executive Vice President & General Counsel, the Liability Claims Manager oversees outside counsel, directs claim strategy, sets and maintains claim reserves, and negotiates settlements. This role is central to protecting the company's financial and legal interests. It demands sound judgment, disciplined follow-through, and clear, timely communication so that leadership and stakeholders always understand claim status, exposure, and next steps. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Handle non-employment liability claims (general liability, premises, auto, property, and similar exposures) through outside counsel and, where appropriate, third-party administrators and insurers, from initial reporting through closure. Manage outside litigation across the portfolio, working with outside counsel to develop and execute case strategy, control legal spend, and drive matters toward efficient, favorable resolution. Set and maintain claim reserves, evaluate exposure, and adjust reserves as matters develop, ensuring reserves accurately reflect the probable outcome of each claim. Negotiate and settle claims directly and through counsel, securing resolutions that protect the company's financial and legal interests within delegated authority. Support litigation and discovery: respond to discovery, coordinate the collection and production of documents and information, work with facilities to preserve evidence, and prepare witnesses and personnel as needed. Manage certificate of insurance compliance: track and maintain certificates of insurance from vendors, contractors, licensees and concessionaires; confirm required coverage limits; and verify that Troon and applicable owners are named as additional insureds, following up on expirations and deficiencies. Assess risk and drive mitigation: analyze loss trends, and recommend and help implement measures to reduce the frequency and severity of future claims across the portfolio. Communicate and report: provide clear, timely, and consistent reporting to the General Counsel and leadership on claim status, developments, reserves, settlement posture, and outcomes, including periodic status summaries and reporting on significant matters. Partner with the field: act as a primary point of contact for facilities and general managers on incident response and serious-incident reporting, guiding time-sensitive evidence preservation and early claim handling. Coordinate with carriers and brokers: coordinate with insurers, brokers, and third-party administrators on claim tenders, coverage, and program matters, and support the interplay between self-insured retentions, deductibles, and covered losses. Manage data and records: maintain accurate, organized claim files and data; track key dates, deadlines, and financials; and support litigation-management, budgeting, and forecasting through reliable claim information. Control costs: monitor legal spend against budgets, review and manage outside counsel billing and guidelines, and pursue cost-effective handling without compromising outcomes. Perform other duties and support related risk, compliance, and legal initiatives as assigned by the General Counsel. Qualifications and Experience Bachelor's degree required. A J.D., paralegal certification, insurance or risk designation (such as ARM, AIC, or CPCU), or comparable credential is a plus. Five or more years of experience in claims management, litigation management, insurance or risk management, or a closely related field, ideally with exposure to multi-site, hospitality, retail, or recreation operations. Demonstrated experience managing outside counsel and directing litigation strategy through resolution. Working knowledge of claims handling, the litigation and discovery process, reserving practices, and settlement negotiation. Familiarity with commercial insurance concepts, including general liability, property, auto, umbrella and excess, certificates of insurance, additional-insured requirements, deductibles, and self-insured retentions. Strong analytical skills, with the ability to evaluate exposure, quantify risk, and set appropriate reserves. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to report clearly and concisely to executives and to communicate effectively with facilities in the field. High level of organization and attention to detail, with the ability to manage a large volume of active matters and competing deadlines independently. Sound judgment, discretion, and the ability to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and comfort working within claims, matter-management, or litigation-tracking systems.
