Correctional Officer Hiring Event (7/1/2026)

Position Overview Non‑exempt, full‑time, uniformed entry‑level correctional officer responsible for maintaining security and discipline at the Frederick County Adult Detention Center on any shift as assigned. Duties performed under close supervision from a Field Training Officer, Correctional Officer II or higher, with structured on‑the‑job training during an 18‑month probationary period. Responsibilities Maintain direct supervision, security, and control over inmate population; enforce facility rules and disciplinary standards. Submit written reports of violations or irregularities. Conduct counts, routine searches, and cell shakedowns to control contraband. Perform security checks to ensure safety and condition of the facility. Observe inmate behavior to detect and prevent disturbances, escape attempts, and violations. Assist in physically controlling dangerous situations. Escort inmates for in‑house activities and enforce safety. Process new incarcerates, prepare records, and manage inmate property. Distribute sanitation supplies, mail, bedding, and clothing. Communicate with the public, attorneys, bondsmen, law enforcement, and courts as necessary. Operate radio equipment, electric security doors, monitor cameras, and life safety systems. Perform other related duties as required. Qualifications and Requirements Minimum age 18 years. U.S. citizenship. High school graduation or equivalent. Valid automobile operator's license. Eligibility for Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission (MPCTC) certification within 1 year of employment (must maintain). Ability to maintain County Authorized Driver privileges and training requirements of FCSO and MPCTC. Proficiency in supervising inmates and enforcing rules. Quick, calm response to duty and emergency situations with good judgment. Ability to build effective relationships with inmates, coworkers, and the public. Strong written and verbal communication skills in English. Physical Requirements / Working Conditions Sound physical condition to meet spontaneous demands (restraints, searches, foot pursuits) and comply with FCSO physical fitness standards. Constant walking, reaching, repetitive motions; frequent sitting, climbing, stooping; lifting up to 20 lbs regularly and 20‑50 lbs occasionally. Work indoors in noisy environment with potential exposure to infectious diseases; outdoors on uneven ground wearing protective equipment; occasional dirty and dusty environments.
