Summary The Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) is seeking a Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT) Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to work in the diagnostic imaging service – MRI section located in Houston, TX. The employee will operate MRI equipment, conduct examinations, provide patient care, and work under the direct supervision of a physician. The role requires independent technical work and full functional activity. Qualifications Citizenship & Certification Must be a United States citizen Non‑citizens may be appointed when no qualified U.S. candidates are available per VA Handbook 5005 Must hold valid ARRT certification in general radiologic technology Advanced ARRT certification (CT, MRI, or Mammography) required for independent duties in those modalities Education & Training Completion of a 24‑month full‑time diagnostic radiologic technology program or equivalent, accredited by JRCERT or an equivalent agency Grandfathering provision applies to current DRTs at effective date of this standard Specialty Knowledge (MRI) Knowledge of superconducting magnet physics, safety, and anatomical imaging Expertise in cross‑sectional anatomy, magnetic environment safety, RF surface coils, contrast media, power injectors, and PACS Advanced ARRT MR certification required for independent MRI duties Experience Preferred: Certified as an MRI Technologist with at least 1 year of experience At least 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS‑9) directly related to this position Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs) Balance patient and staff needs while performing complex scans Gather relevant information from medical records and providers Assess contraindications for procedures Provide basic first aid and life support practices related to radiography Implement aseptic techniques for IV access and universal precautions Prepare patients and manage pre‑, procedural, and post‑procedural care Duties Operate MRI equipment to acquire high‑quality diagnostic images per radiologist protocols Verify patient identification and review medical history relevant to MRI procedures Screen patients for contraindications such as metal implants or pacemakers Explain procedures, address concerns, and alleviate patient anxiety Provide patient‑centered care tailored to adult and geriatric patients Perform a range of MRI exams (head, neck, spine, chest, abdomen, pelvis, extremities) with and without contrast Conduct Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) exams for arteries and veins throughout the body Position and immobilize patients using cushions, straps, or supports to ensure comfort, safety, and image quality Review radiology requests for accuracy, appropriateness, and scheduling Consult with radiologists when necessary regarding questionable details Document all relevant information in VistA and/or the patient’s electronic health record Maintain technical proficiency across scanner models, applications, and protocols Optimize scan times while managing emergency cases Insert intravenous lines for contrast administration using aseptic technique Participate in quality control and assurance programs Perform routine equipment checks and basic troubleshooting of MRI systems Report and document incidents, malfunctions, or safety concerns promptly Keep the MRI suite organized with supplies, contrast agents, IV kits, syringes, PPE, linens, and disinfectants Complete assignments independently and aid team members as needed, including support for students and allied health professionals in this teaching institute Benefits and Compensation Work schedule: Monday–Friday, 12:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. (subject to change) Competitive salary with potential for higher step rate based on qualifications Paid Time Off: 37–50 days per year (13–26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 federal holidays) Parental Leave: up to 12 weeks paid after 12 months of employment, applicable to birth, adoption, or foster placement Child‑Care Subsidy: up to 25 % of eligible costs for full‑time employees with household income below $144,000 (maximum $416.66 per month) Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5‑year vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5 % VA contribution Insurance: VA health, vision, dental, term life, long‑term care, and other federal programs available during retirement Telework: Not available; position is on‑site Functional Statement #: 580-00184-F.
