Sewer Collections Maintenance Worker

The City of Hanford is seeking to fill one (1) Sewer Collections Maintenance Worker vacancy in the Utilities and Engineering Department. This position is to perform a variety of semi-skilled work in the maintenance of the city sanitary sewer collection system; and to provide maintenance support in the field on special projects.

Sewer Collections Maintenance Worker I - This is the entry-level class in the Maintenance Worker series. Positions in this class typically have little or no directly related work experience and work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks. Maintenance Worker I class is distinguished from the II level by the performance of less than the full range of duties assigned to the II level. Incumbents work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks, progressing to general supervision as procedures and processes of assigned area of responsibility are learned.

Sewer Collections Maintenance Worker II - This is the journey level class in the Maintenance Worker series and is distinguished from the I level by the assignment of the full range of duties. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new, unusual, or unique situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level. This class is distinguished from the Senior Maintenance Worker in that the latter is responsible for providing technical and functional supervision of less experienced staff, and for performing the most complex work of the unit.

Supervision Received and Exercised

• Sewer Collections Maintenance Worker I Receives immediate supervision from an assigned supervisor; may receive technical and functional supervision from a Senior Maintenance Worker.
• Sewer Collections Maintenance Worker II Receives general supervision from an assigned supervisor; may receive technical and functional supervision from a Senior Maintenance Worker.

Example of Essential Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Respond to complaints and answer questions from the public.
• Perform routine maintenance work in the care of tools and supplies.
• Train less experienced staff in proper work methods and procedures.
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
• Foster an environment that embraces diversity, integrity, trust, and respect.
• Be an integral team player, which involves flexibility, cooperation, and communication.
• Perform semi-skilled work in the installation, repair, and maintenance of the sanitary sewer lines, mains, and related facilities.
• Operate vacuum/jet rodder truck to clean sewers trunk lines and laterals, and vacuum manhole/catch basins.
• Perform maintenance and repair of lift stations and related pipes, fittings, electrical panels, and other equipment.
• Check timing of wastewater pumps; make necessary repairs or replacements.
• Operate equipment including backhoe, jackhammer, compressor, and concrete saws to repair sewer and storm drain line breaks.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of: Common tools and materials used in the area of assignment. Basic repair and maintenance procedures and practices. Safe work practices. Ability to: Perform minor maintenance activities related to the area of assignment. On a continuous basis, know and understand maintenance activities and observe safety rules. Intermittently, analyze problem equipment; identify safety hazards; locate equipment; interpret work orders; remember how to operate equipment; and explain jobs to other employees. Intermittently, sit while driving a piece of equipment; stand and walk while performing maintenance activities; bend and twist to adjust equipment; kneel and squat to review work; climb up on to heavy equipment to test or inspect systems; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; lift or carry weight of 50 pounds or less, and occasionally exert more than 100 pounds of force. Safely and efficiently use tools related to area of assignment. Learn to operate a variety of maintenance equipment, including hand and power tools. Learn basic carpentry, electrical, painting, and plumbing. Perform heavy manual labor. Maintain daily records and logs. Use sound judgment in recognizing scope of authority. Operate and use modern office equipment including computers and applicable software. Maintain regular attendance and adhere to prescribed work schedule to conduct job responsibilities. Utilize appropriate safety procedures and practices for assigned duties. Communicate effectively orally and in writing. Relate effectively with people of varied academic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds using tact, diplomacy, and courtesy. Establish and maintain effective, cooperative, and collaborative working relationships with others.

Sewer Collections Maintenance Worker I Experience and Education Any combination of experience and education that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be: Experience: Some construction or field maintenance work experience is desirable. Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. License and Certificate Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California Class C driver's license. Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California Class B driver's license with tanker and air brake endorsements within twelve months of appointment. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a forklift certificate within twelve months of appointment. Possession of, or ability to obtain, confined space certification within twelve months of appointment.

Sewer Collections Maintenance Worker II In addition to the qualifications for the Maintenance Worker I: Knowledge of: Practices and techniques of sanitary sewer system repair and maintenance. Ability to: Operate motorized equipment such as tractors and trucks. Operate specialized job-related equipment, including pneumatic tools. Perform basic carpentry, electrical, painting, and plumbing. Read and understand schematic diagrams and manuals. Perform confined space entry. Experience and Education Any combination of experience and education that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be: Experience: Two years of responsible experience similar to Maintenance Worker I with the City of Hanford. Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. License and Certificate Possession of, a valid California Class B driver's license with tanker and air brake endorsements. Possession of a forklift certificate. Possession of a valid confined space certificate.

Additional Information

Screening will consist of a competitive assessment of relevant education, training, and work experience to be followed by a written examination and/or an interview before an Oral Board to determine the most qualified candidates. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement to an interview, and the decision of the screening committee is final. Those candidates who are determined eligible for appointment to the position will be placed on the City's Certified Eligibility List. Applicants will receive written notification regarding the results of all phases of the recruitment process up to the establishment of the Eligibility List, if applicable.
