Description:
The unit has 27 beds, which include 13 private and 14 semi-private rooms.
Nurse to patient ratios are 1:4 for telemetry patients and 1:5 for MedSurg patients.
In a mixed team of MedSurg and telemetry patients, the ratio remains at 1:4.
The patient population includes acute and chronic medical conditions and post-surgical patients, including total joints.
Candidates must be comfortable with urology, GYN, podiatry, and general surgery.
Potential stroke patients may also be encountered.
RNs are not required to titrate drips, with common drips including heparin.
The unit utilizes remote telemetry with monitors stationed on a cardiac tele unit.
Monitoring techs are available to assist with interpreting strips, but RNs must read, interpret, and sign off on them.
There is a house supervisor on-site 24/7 and nurse managers during normal business hours.
Charge nurses and break nurses are present on each shift.
If no nurse shift manager is available, the charge nurse takes on team assignments to accommodate patient care needs.
CNA ratios are based on census.
Respiratory therapy equipment used includes CPAP or BiPAP, but there are no vents.
Shifts are 12 hours from 7 AM to 7:30 PM and 7 PM to 7:30 AM.
All staff members participate in a shift huddle at 7 AM and 7 PM.
The weekend requirement includes four weekend shifts every four weeks.
Weekend shifts are Friday/Saturday for nights and Saturday/Sunday for days.
Holidays require one major and one minor shift minimum.
There is no on-call requirement, but staff may be placed on standby for low census.
Travelers float first, with potential floating to other medical/surgical tele units or ICU for MedSurg tele patients.
Scrubs should be navy blue.
Undershirts must also be navy, white, or black, and scrub jackets must be navy as well.
No hoodies, sweatshirts, or sweat jackets are permitted.
Unit-specific orientation consists of one to two shifts with a preceptor.
The cancellation policy allows the hospital to cancel up to four shifts per 13-week assignment.
The charting system used is Cerner.
A BSN is not required.
