Director of Construction
Director of Construction Location: Long Island, NY (Relocation Supported) Compensation: $200,000 Base + Commission + Performance Bonus + Full Benefits Reports To: Chief Operating Officer (COO) Overview We are adding a Director of Construction as a strategic growth hire to lead and scale a multi-market construction operation supporting restoration, ground-up construction (commercial and residential), remodeling, and build-outs. This role is being created due to sustained growth and future geographic expansion, including planned entry into the Florida market. This is a field-driven leadership role, with approximately 50% of time spent in the field and 50% focused on planning, coordination, and executive alignment. The Director of Construction will oversee execution across 25 locations, including six in Canada, with the majority of work concentrated in New York. Many offices function primarily as logistics hubs and are not fully staffed—this role requires a leader who can operate independently, decisively, and without layers of support. Occasional travel to Toronto is required. Most travel will be to local offices and active job sites. This role is intentionally demanding and is designed for a senior construction leader with deep operational experience, consistent career progression, and a proven ability to manage complexity at scale.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and oversee ground-up commercial and residential construction, restoration projects, remodels, and tenant/build-out work
- Own field execution across multiple concurrent job sites, ensuring schedule adherence, cost control, quality, and safety
- Act as the senior construction authority in the field, setting expectations and enforcing accountability
- Partner closely with the COO on construction strategy, growth planning, and operational scaling
- Establish and standardize construction processes, reporting, and performance metrics across locations
- Lead, influence, and align project managers, superintendents, subcontractors, and third-party partners
- Navigate high-pressure environments where conditions change and decisions must be made on site
- Support geographic expansion efforts, including infrastructure planning for Florida market entry
- Travel regularly to job sites and regional offices; occasional international travel to Toronto
What This Role Is — and Is Not
This is a true Director-level leadership role, not a training or development position. This is not appropriate for junior or mid-level construction managers. Success requires hands-on field leadership, not theoretical oversight. You will be expected to operate with autonomy, sound judgment, and minimal supervision.
Why This Opportunity
This role offers real authority, real accountability, and real upside. The company is established, expanding, and investing in leadership to support long-term growth across the U.S. and Canada. The expectations are high, the challenges are real, and the compensation reflects the level of responsibility.
Requirements
Required Experience & Background
- Senior-level construction leadership experience with strong emphasis on ground-up commercial and residential projects
- Demonstrated success overseeing multiple projects and locations simultaneously
- Stable, consistent work history reflecting progression and increasing responsibility
- Deep knowledge of construction means and methods, scheduling, budgeting, and risk management
- Proven ability to lead experienced construction professionals and command respect in the field
- Experience operating in growth-oriented, performance-driven environments
- Willingness to relocate to the Long Island / New York market if not already local
Benefits
Compensation & Benefits
- Base Salary: $200,000
- Commission Structure: Tied to project performance, execution metrics, and/or revenue contribution
- Annual Performance Bonus: Based on individual and company performance
- Comprehensive benefits package including: Health, dental, and vision insurance
- 401(k)
- Company vehicle
- Gas and toll cards
- Company phone or allowance
- Full technology package (laptop, tablet, software)
