The Manager, EHS will provide strategic leadership and oversight for environmental, health, and safety programs across utility construction operations. This role is responsible for driving a proactive safety culture, ensuring compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and company standards, and supporting operational excellence through effective risk management, incident prevention, training initiatives, and continuous improvement. Working closely with project teams, field leadership, clients, and subcontractors, the Manager, EHS will lead safety professionals, champion best practices, and help ensure all work is performed safely, responsibly, and in full compliance with regulatory requirements. The Manager, EHS will provide strategic leadership and oversight for environmental, health, and safety programs across utility construction operations. This role is responsible for driving a proactive safety culture, ensuring compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and company standards, and supporting operational excellence through effective risk management, incident prevention, training initiatives, and continuous improvement. Working closely with project teams, field leadership, clients, and subcontractors, the Manager, EHS will lead safety professionals, champion best practices, and help ensure all work is performed safely, responsibly, and in full compliance with regulatory requirements. What You'll Do Here:
- Team with Aecon project management teams and field workers to implement and devise solutions to safety-related issues on Aecon project sites.
- Partner with leadership to build and sustain a proactive safety culture through employee engagement, safety committees, recognition programs, behavior-based safety initiatives, and continuous improvement efforts.
- Provide project and site-specific safety training and orientation to workers, owners and clients.
- Conduct project audits, inspections, risk assessments, and compliance reviews; identify hazards and implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Participate in the development and delivery of EHS training programs to ensure employee compliance with safety policies, procedures, and requirements.
- Manage OSHA-required programs, recordkeeping, training, reporting, and regulatory inspections.
- Develop, implement, and maintain environmental, health, and safety policies, programs, and procedures to ensure regulatory compliance and workplace safety.
- Liaise with external parties such as EPCs, subcontractors, and the general public as required to minimize risk.
- Ensure subcontractor and worker compliance with all applicable OSHA, EPA, DOT, federal, state, and local regulations and Aecon-related safety materials.
- Monitor and analyze EHS performance metrics, develop action plans, and recommend improvements to enhance safety, environmental performance, and operational effectiveness.
- Review project plans, sites, equipment, and processes before work commences, identifying safety-related risks and mitigating risks prior to mobilization.
- Lead emergency preparedness activities, including emergency response planning, evacuation procedures, and drills.
- Lead investigations of workplace injuries, near misses, environmental incidents, and property damage events to determine root causes and reduce future risk.
- Participate in worker compensation claims, return-to-work programs, and injury prevention initiatives.
- Provide guidance, coaching, and support to managers, supervisors, and employees regarding EHS compliance, safety leadership, best practices, and Aecon-related EHS materials.
- Onboard new Aecon Safety Advisors within their regions.
- Represent Aecon at meetings with stakeholders and other organizations on issues regarding workplace health and safety matters.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Minimum 10 years' experience coordinating and managing health and safety for heavy civil infrastructure projects.
- Knowledge of construction projects with a solid understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA).
- Bachelor's degree in a related field.
- Have or attain within six months: Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP).
- Background in training and/or education and experience delivering EHS training programs to individuals and groups.
- Intermediate to advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Cority incident management software.
- Ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy.
- Experience working on complex construction projects.
- Exceptional organizational, people, and time management skills.
- Excellent meeting and training facilitation skills.
- Adaptable and flexible to an ever-changing environment.
- Valid driver's license with a good driving record and the ability to drive to job sites.
