Department: Production Reports To: Production Manager Job Summary: The Structural Steel Painter is responsible for preparing, priming, and painting structural steel components and assemblies according to project specifications and quality standards. This role involves surface preparation, application of coatings, and inspection of finished products to ensure durability, aesthetics, and compliance with safety and environmental regulations. The Structural Steel Painter plays a critical role in enhancing the longevity and appearance of steel structures used in construction projects. Key Responsibilities: Surface Preparation: Prepare steel surfaces by cleaning, sanding, and applying appropriate treatments to ensure adhesion of primers and coatings. Remove rust, scale, and contaminants using abrasive tools, power washers, or chemical treatments as necessary. Paint Application: Apply primers, paints, and coatings to structural steel components using spray guns, brushes, or rollers, ensuring even coverage and thickness. Follow paint manufacturer instructions, mixing ratios, and application techniques to achieve desired finish and protection. Quality Control and Inspection: Inspect painted surfaces for defects, runs, or uneven coverage; make necessary corrections to meet quality standards. Perform adhesion tests, dry film thickness (DFT) measurements, and visual inspections to verify compliance with project specifications and industry standards. Safety and Compliance: Adhere to safety protocols, personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, and environmental regulations related to paint application and disposal. Maintain a clean and organized work area, disposing of hazardous materials and waste according to company policies and regulatory guidelines. Documentation and Recordkeeping: Record paint mixing ratios, consumption rates, and job progress in painting logs or project documentation. Document inspections, test results, and compliance records related to paint application and quality assurance. Coordinate with production teams, project managers, and quality control personnel to schedule painting activities and meet project deadlines. Communicate effectively with team members to resolve issues, prioritize tasks, and ensure efficient workflow in the finishing department. Position Requirements Qualifications: Experience: Proven experience as a Structural Steel Painter or similar role, with expertise in industrial painting techniques and surface preparation. Familiarity with coatings, paint types, and application methods in structural steel fabrication preferred. Skills and Competencies: Knowledge of painting tools and equipment, including spray guns, brushes, rollers, and air compressors. Understanding of paint mixing, blending, and matching techniques to achieve specified colors and finishes. Attention to detail, accuracy, and commitment to quality in painting and finishing operations. Ability to interpret drawings, specifications, and instructions related to surface preparation and painting requirements. Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, to collaborate with team members and stakeholders. Tools and Equipment Used: Painting tools and equipment (e.g., spray guns, brushes, rollers). Surface preparation tools (e.g., sanders, power washers). Personal protective equipment (PPE) for safety (e.g., respirators, gloves). Work Environment: Manufacturing or construction environment with exposure to steel fabrication processes and industrial paints. Requires occasional lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods during painting operations. Availability for flexible work hours to meet project deadlines and production schedules. Quality Control: Ensure adherence to painting standards, specifications, and regulatory requirements. Conduct inspections and tests to verify paint quality, durability, and finish. Performance Metrics: Painting productivity and efficiency measures. Quality assurance metrics (e.g., defect rates, compliance with specifications). Safety incident rates and adherence to safety protocols.
