Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory has an opening for an Electrical Safety Specialist to support the Occupational, Safety and Health Division. The Electrical Safety Specialist supports the implementation and continuous improvement of the organization's Electrical Safety Program by promoting compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including OSHA, NFPA 70E, the National Electrical Code (NEC), and 10 CFR 851. This position is responsible for delivering and documenting electrical safety and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) training; conducting field inspections, audits, and assessments; supporting electrical equipment inspection and testing programs; and providing technical guidance to ensure the safe installation, operation, and maintenance of electrical systems and equipment. The Electrical Safety Specialist works collaboratively with employees, project teams, subcontractors, and management to identify and mitigate electrical hazards, verify compliance with electrical safety requirements, support incident prevention, and promote a culture of electrical safety throughout the organization. The primary objective of this position is to promote and sustain a safe electrical work environment by identifying, evaluating, and controlling electrical hazards, while providing guidance and training on safe work practices. This position is dedicated to advancing electrical safety, reducing the risk of injury, equipment damage, and operational disruptions, and ensuring compliance with applicable electrical safety standards and regulatory requirements to protect employees, the public, the environment, and organizational assets. Responsibilities Core Duties Organizing, conducting, and documenting Lockout/Tagout Training, Basic Electrical Safety and additional training requirements in accordance with 10 CFR851, OSHA, NFPA 70E and PPPL electrical safety training programs. Conducting/ documenting LOTO field audits monthly/ quarterly as well as reviewing subcontractor LOTO programs in accordance with PPPL internal procedure. Identifying and inspecting electrical equipment supporting PPPLs Electrical Equipment Inspection Program (EEIP). Conducting receipt inspections of electrical equipment, components and wire/cables. Supporting the electrical PPE, voltage rated gloves, boots, etc. testing and inspection requirements. Supporting testing, organizing and ensuring proper documentation of hot stick testing, and electrical safety mats. Conduct follow-up inspections for PPPL onsite work. Participate with and document PPPL safety surveillances - electrical coverage. Attend pre-job, project and Laboratory meetings as assigned. Provide field oversight of electrical equipment installations, modifications, witness testing, and energization field activities. Investigate field as-built conditions in accordance with the design documents and inspect construction of electrical equipment, wiring and systems. Execute PPPL Electrical Safety Program requirements per NFPA 70E and OSHA standards. Provide electrical safety training to staff on electrical safety program requirements, safe work practices, and hazard recognition to ensure compliance with workplace health and safety requirements. Disseminate approved electrical safety information and instructions to promote the objectives of the electrical safety program through effective oral and written communication. Maintain currency in applicable federal, state, and local safety regulations and codes, and modify PPPL policies and procedures to ensure adherence to the latest requirements. Complete required training and maintain qualifications associated with assignment. Qualifications Associate degree, technical certification, military training, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technology, or a closely related field is preferred. Four (4) to six (6) years of experience in the inspection, testing, operation, maintenance, or troubleshooting of electrical systems and components, or an equivalent combination of relevant civilian or military experience. Familiarity with NFPA 70E electrical safety practices, electrical hazard recognition, and the interpretation and application of electrical safety requirements in industrial, commercial, government, or laboratory environments is preferred. A bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline may be substituted for a portion of the required experience. Knowledge, Skills And Abilities: Must have experience in the following areas: electrical one-line drawings, electrical national consensus codes and standards including NFPA 70 (NEC), NFPA 70E, NFPA 70B and IEEE; OSHA 29 CFR 1910 Subpart S, and PPE requirements for arc flash and shock protection as well as Arc Flash and Shock Risk Assessments. The candidate must communicate technical information clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, to audiences ranging from senior management and technical staff to trade workers. Strong interpersonal, collaboration, and safety-based decision-making skills are essential, along with the ability to promote a positive safety culture and drive continuous improvement in safety and regulatory compliance. Computer Skills: Proficiency in standard office software, including word processing, spreadsheets, and data entry (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace), with the ability to accurately manage files and digital documentation. Certificates And Licenses: NFPA 70E training is preferred but not required. Physical Requirements: Must be capable of accessing all work areas in order to physically view work practices and conduct inspections. This may involve bending, climbing, and kneeling. Must be able to periodically lift up to 25 lbs. Working Conditions: Primarily an industrial/research laboratory setting, with occasional outdoor work in varying weather conditions (heat and cold). Salaried (exempt) position may require some night and weekend coverage; not eligible for overtime pay. 100% on-site; remote or off-site work is not permitted.
