Distinguishing Career Features The Student Services Specialist Senior is the senior-level classification in the Student Services series. This class is distinguished from the Student Services Assistant, which performs entry-level administrative and clerical functions and more basic duties in support of the assigned program; and Student Services Specialist, which performs varied and mid-level administrative/clerical and technical program support and/or specialized functions related to the area of assignment, program, department, or office.
The Department
The Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS) provides educational services and access for eligible students with documented disabilitieswho intend to pursue coursework at Golden West College (GWC). A variety of programs and services are available, which allow eligible students with disabilities the opportunity to participate fully in all aspects of college programs and activities through appropriate and reasonable accommodations.

Knowledge and Skills
The position requires an Associate's degree in education, social science, or related field and four (4) years in a highly responsible technical/program support capacity, involving frequent customer contact, preferably in an educational environment. Time to Refuel Vacation - Classified employees earn vacation days commensurate with years of service. Confidential, Educational Administrators, and Classified Managers earn 22 days of vacation each fiscal year. Accrued vacation is prorated for all employee categories working less than full-time.
Sick Leave - All contract employees earn sick leave as outlined in the CA Education Code. Sick leave may be carried over from year-to-year and, upon retirement, unused sick leave may contribute to your CalPERS or CalSTRS retirement pension benefit.
Holidays - The Coast Community College District observes 22 paid holidays per year.
Jury Duty, Bereavement, Military Leave - Coast Community College District grants contract employees called to jury duty a leave of absence, without loss of pay, for the entire length of required service. Other available leaves include bereavement from 3-5 days and military leaves of absence in accordance with applicable state laws.
Great Expectations Pension Plans - The Coast Community College District participates in the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS) and the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) for contract employees. Non-contract employees participate in the Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS) plan for the first 1,000 hours of their employment.
Medical Benefits After Retirement - It is the policy of the Coast Community College District that contract employees, who retire from the District at age 60 or older and with fifteen or more years of service, be afforded the same group insurance benefits until 70 years of age. - Coordinates and provides oversight to the day-to-day operations involving providing logistical and functional support and scheduling of activities and events related to assigned program; ensures efficient and effective workflow to meet program timelines and student needs.
- Assists current and prospective students with various needs related to the assigned program; determines eligibility, provides necessary information, troubleshoots issues and concerns and assists students with accurate completion of required program documentation.
- Responds to student, faculty, staff and/or community inquiries; resolves complaints and various issues; provides direction to appropriate personnel/departments to assist with resolution, if necessary; provides information and available resources to students.
- Serves as the subject matter expert and resource to students, faculty, management, staff and the community on assigned program.
- Coordinates program budget and fiscal processes, including procurement, purchase orders, invoices, transaction records, as well as projections for operational and project expenses. Monitors and maintains records on all program funding sources.
- Researches, responds and resolves routine student program issues; referring issues of more complex areas of concern to the appropriate manager and/or administrator for consultation. Makes recommendations for mutually acceptable resolutions.
- Coordinates logistics for outreach activities, meetings, and events.
- Develops, implements, and conducts informational workshops and trainings related to assigned program and services; works with external agencies to provide information on available resources for students.
- Provides support to administrators, faculty, counselors, and managers by prioritizing and assigning work to lower classifications, temporary/hourly staff, and student workers; provides training as needed in the assigned program.
- Works closely with offices of Campus Life, Student Health Center, Public Safety, Enrollment Services, Counseling, Instructional Faculty, Fiscal Services, and other departments across campus and the District to ensure cohesive and collaborative student service.
- Researches, collects, and analyzes internal and external data from diverse sources to assess needs and plan co-curricular program activities, excursions, and events.
- Provides complex technical information and group or one-on-one assistance to students, instructors, counselors, and others in the assigned program.
- Creates, prepares, designs, maintains, and delivers program resource information, presentations, reports, correspondence, and promotional materials; provides information for social media and website presence.
- Interprets and conveys specialized program guidelines and applicable state and federal laws, college and program policies, rules and regulations to students, instructors, counselors, and others.
- Assists with hiring process for student assistants and other staff, as assigned.
- Researches and assists in analyzing and interpreting guidelines and regulations associated to assigned program.
- Performs technically complex and difficult student advising and processing with minimal supervision.
- Compiles and analyzes data to assist in the preparation and dissemination of program reports and maintains necessary database records in accordance with federal, state, and local policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Collects, updates, and maintains relevant confidential student information in student database and files, and/or special program databases, and/or additional corresponding reporting systems.
- Monitors and responds to requests for service, and refers/schedules student appointments for program services, as needed; maintains records related to student changes and/or needs.
- Maintains inventory of program supplies and materials, oversees expenditure approval processes, purchasing, tracking, and monitoring of supply orders.

Sabbatical Leaves
Faculty members are encouraged to pursue professional growth leading to the development of increased competence and the improvement of instruction and/or redirection in their current teaching discipline. The District's sabbatical leave program is designed to assist in this pursuit and is available on a semester basis after completing six consecutive years of service.
Academic Senate
The Academic Senate is the governing body at each of our colleges for making recommendations to administration and to our Board of Trustees with respect to academic and professional matters. The Senate consists of elected faculty and has the responsibility for matters related to curriculum and general academic policy.
Time to Refuel Vacation - Classified employees earn vacation days commensurate with years of service. Confidential, Educational Administrators, and Classified Managers earn 22 days of vacation each fiscal year. Accrued vacation is prorated for all employee categories working less than full-time.
Sick Leave - All contract employees earn sick leave as outlined in the CA Education Code. Sick leave may be carried over from year-to-year and, upon retirement, unused sick leave may contribute to your CalPERS or CalSTRS retirement pension benefit.
Holidays - The Coast Community College District observes 22 paid holidays per year.
Jury Duty, Bereavement, Military Leave - Coast Community College District grants contract employees called to jury duty a leave of absence, without loss of pay, for the entire length of required service. Other available leaves include bereavement from 3-5 days and military leaves of absence in accordance with applicable state laws.
Great Expectations Pension Plans - The Coast Community College District participates in the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS) and the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) for contract employees. Non-contract employees participate in the Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS) plan for the first 1,000 hours of their employment.
Medical Benefits After Retirement - It is the policy of the Coast Community College District that contract employees, who retire from the District at age 60 or older and with fifteen or more years of service, be afforded the same group insurance benefits until 70 years of age. A Medicare Supplement plan is available to retirees and their spouses after age 70.
Annuities - The Coast Community College District maintains a program whereby qualified employees may request through Payroll to have a portion of their salary deposited to a 403b tax-sheltered annuity plan or an approved 457 deferred compensation plan.
Schools First Federal Credit Union - The Schools First Federal Credit Union is a federally insured, full service, financial cooperative that is a not-for-profit organization. Earnings are used to benefit all members to provide a full range of financial services and offerings.
