Registered Nurse, RN - Emergency Department

Job Title Registered Nurse, RN – ED, Tufts Medical Center Job Summary This professional registered nurse provides patient care in the Emergency Department on a 36‑hour per week day/night rotating shift, supervising other lower‑level professionals and managing processes and programs. The RN serves as a patient and family advocate, facilitates a cooperative environment among all health care providers, and ensures the delivery of quality, patient‑centered care. Responsibilities Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates the care needs of a designated group of patients or provides nursing care and identified clinical support tasks within scope of practice. Provides professional nursing care to patients and follows physician orders. presents and oversees design, implementation or delivery of processes, programs and policies using specialized knowledge. manages projects/processes, works independently with limited supervision, coaches and reviews work of lower‑level professionals, resolves difficult and complex problems. Utilizes theoretical and evidence‑based knowledge to assess, plan, implement and evaluate age‑appropriate care in partnership with patients and families. Assesses and collaborates with patient, family/significant others and other disciplines to identify expected outcomes based on synthesis of data and diagnosis; identifies cultural needs to develop a care plan that enhances the health care experience. Plans and develops individualized outcomes‑based care plans; orchestrates and validates a plan of care for each shift; initiates interdisciplinary patient/family meetings; communicates and coordinates patient discharge plan utilizing unit‑based and community resources. Implements the plan in a safe and timely manner; documents implementation and any modifications; collaborates with nursing colleagues and others to implement the plan; utilizes evidence‑based interventions and treatments specific to the diagnosis or problem; provides and coordinates health teaching; documents per hospital and regulatory requirements. Evaluates effectiveness of planned strategies relative to patient responses and attainment of expected outcomes; updates plan of care as required. Demonstrates skill and judgement necessary to implement nursing plan of care, nursing interventions and procedures. Performs procedures and treatments using nursing knowledge and judgment according to unit/practice area guidelines and professional standards. Safely administers medication and assesses patient response utilizing pharmacology knowledge. Maintains clinical competency with respect to technology and utilizes equipment safely. Advocates and educates patients and families; provides high quality care efficiently and safely. Uses data trends to support and improve clinical practice. Participates in hospital/unit‑based patient safety and quality activities; contributes to patient outcomes improvements (unit‑based, hospital‑wide, The Joint Commission, NPSGs, NDNQI, Patient First and other local, state and federal initiatives). Participates in performance improvement activities through data collection, analysis and evaluation. Champions quality, safety, regulatory and patient‑family satisfaction. Facilitates cooperative and collaborative relationships among various disciplines; supports collaboration with nursing colleagues and other disciplines through reporting rounds. Delegates responsibilities to others, guiding them based on their roles, knowledge and capabilities. Influences others to achieve service excellence: establishes a climate for optimal patient care, promotes a safe, clean therapeutic environment, acknowledges cultural differences, presents self professionally, provides responsible use of resources. Participates in professional development and lifelong learning; maintains licensure; supports educational opportunities and advanced certification; precepts and mentors newly hired staff and nursing students; applies evidence‑based practice and research to daily activities; promotes leadership at bedside. May assume charge nurse functions in collaboration with unit leadership. Facilitates communication: shares job‑related information, maintains professional conduct, and participates in staff meetings and emails. Qualifications Registered Nurse (RN) license. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Certificates such as ACLS, PALS may be required. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Specialty nursing certifications. Physical Requirements Prolonged standing/walking. Lifts, positions, pushes, transfers patients and equipment. Reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching. Exposure to hazardous chemicals, sick patients, bodily substances, noise, radiation, lasers, electric shock. Risk of bloodborne diseases. Contact with patients under wide variety of circumstances. Handles emergency and crisis situations. Subject to irregular hours and unpredictable situations; risk of hazardous materials. Skills & Abilities Applies knowledge to provide care across lifespan, considering aging, development and cultural patterns. Provides care per unit guidelines and hospital policies, procedures and protocols. Knows growth and development; interprets age‑specific data; communicates age‑appropriate care.
