Chief Academic Officer
This position is intended to assist the Superintendent of Schools by providing leadership and vision in the ongoing establishment of goals, planning, development coordination, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum, instructional programs, and professional learning in the District.
Supervises: Teaching and Learning Department; includes Directors, Support staff and Clerical staff.
Qualifications:
- Appropriate certification (L-6 or higher) with Doctoral Degree in curriculum and instruction/educational administration preferred;
- Thorough knowledge of concepts and principles of curriculum design and development;
- Knowledge of rules and regulations pertaining to instructional programs;
- Knowledge of school administration and public relations with strong oral and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills;
- Ability to develop and motivate staff;
- A minimum of ten (10) years experience in education, including at least five (5) years in an administrative capacity; Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.
Essential Duties:
- Prompt and regular attendance.
- Serves on the Superintendent's Cabinet team.
- Recommends changes in instructional programs for the District to the Superintendent.
- Assists administrative and teaching staff in effecting desirable curricular changes and in the preparation of curricular materials for all levels.
- Coordinates and directs the work of staff to develop District-wide programs (instructional and professional learning) and curricula to meet the varying needs of the District.
- Establishes procedures for implementing new instructional programs or changes in current instructional programs.
- Chairs committees which research, plan, and organize new curricula and professional programs.
- Provides continuous evaluation and assessment of the District's programs within the realm of responsibility in order to measure their effectiveness.
- Interprets, analyzes and presents assessment data and other data results through quarterly reports to District staff and community.
- Maintains master files relating to the District's curricular and professional learning programs including the scope and sequence of such programs.
- Provides leadership to ensure understanding and promotion of the educational objectives of the District.
- Interprets the curriculum and its philosophy to the Board, administration, staff, and the general public.
- Provides leadership and oversight for building-based quality improvement teams; plans and coordinates in service training for quality improvement teams and establishes procedures to ensure the long-term effective operation of the teams.
- Coordinates with the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning to ensure that the all student services including special education and Multi-tiered System of Support (MTSS) are implemented in compliance with state and federal law.
- Oversees and supports training for School Governance Team. Includes completing reports as required.
- Participate in the District's strategic planning, development, and goal achievement.
- Attend school board meetings and provide reports to the Board of Education as directed by the Superintendent.
- Provides guidance from and to administrators and other staff on program assessment and implementation of new programs.
- Keeps informed of current research, trends, new materials, and methods in the fields of curriculum, instruction and professional learning. Shares information with staff and encourages the use of new materials and methodologies by professional staff.
- Oversees the discovery of grant opportunities and procurement of grants. Includes providing leadership and guidance for activities related to the acquisition of curriculum instruction grants and the implementation of programs related to such grants.
- Stays apprised of governmental statutes, regulations, and rules relating to curriculum and instructional programs.
- Represents the District at meetings of such organizations and groups outside the District inclusive of participation in the work of local, state, and national curriculum associations and study groups.
- Supervises and evaluates the performance of all directors, facilitators, curriculum specialists, and others, as directed by the Superintendent.
- Prioritizes, assigns, and delegates responsibilities to staff and sets performance goals annually to ensure a high level of competency.
- Assists in the recruitment, screening, employment, training, assignment, and evaluation of instructional and professional learning personnel and works with the Human Resources department and building principals in the improvement of individual staff competencies.
- Maximizes limited resources and assists in the development and oversight of budget areas that pertain to curriculum, instruction, staff development, and pupil services.
- Assists in the development of educational specifications for remodeling projects or new construction.
- Oversees class size and works with HR to evaluate and align allotment needs and assignment of staff.
- Performs other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities assigned by the Superintendent.
Physical Requirements:
Able to perform routine physical activities that are required to fulfill job responsibilities including: Light Work: Exerting 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 5 pounds as needed to move objects.
Terms of Employment: Salary shall be paid consistent on the System's approved salary schedule. Length of work year and hours of employment shall be established by the system. Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated by the Superintendent.
