DESCRIPTION

This academic advisor 2 position is part of a close-knit, team-oriented group of advisors focused on graduate business students.

This position serves as the day-to-day program/student affairs advisor for a specific group of graduate students pursuing a business degree. The position is the primary point of contact for students, from orientation through graduation, allowing ongoing interactions with the same group of students during the full course of the graduate program.

The position provides holistic oversight of the graduate student experience, including academic, co-curricular, and student life aspects. Monitors academic progression toward graduation, advises graduate students on problem resolution regarding academic difficulty or delayed completion of degree, addresses course scheduling and registration issues, and provides guidance on curriculum and co-curricular activities. Establishes a close rapport with students and faculty. This position advises students and faculty on academic integrity, academic performance/academic probation, grade policy, leaves of absence, incompletes, and a wide variety of other UCSD and Rady School of Management policy-related issues and completes documentation related to graduation and course registration. This position provides input on course scheduling for their population of students.

As a representative of a Rady School graduate business degree program and its students, this position interfaces with the Registrar's Office, the UCSD Division of Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs (GEPA) UCSD Student Financial Solutions (SFS), International Students & Programs Office (ISPO), and several other campus departments. This position plays a major role (with others) in the planning and implementation of special events such as graduation, preterm prep activities, orientation, and other special events geared to the student experience.

Due to the confidential nature of student information, knowledge of privacy standards/FERPA is important in this role as is the ability to make entries into and seek information from multiple online systems to access information (systems such as student data systems, enrollment systems, degree/college course credit systems, financial aid systems, online syllabus, shared drives).

Note: Each Graduate Academic Advisor specializes in one Rady graduate business program yet is also knowledgeable about other Rady graduate business masters programs: Full-time MBA, FlexEvening MBA, FlexWeekend MBA, Master of Science in Business Analytics, Master of Finance, and Master of Professional Accountancy.

This position typically works 8:00am-4:30pm Monday through Friday hybrid on campus and remote (2 days per week on campus and 3 days per week remote).

The position also works on campus a minimum of one or two weekend days every 2-3 months (per academic quarter) Time off during the week or overtime is provided to compensate for the weekend workdays. Rarely, pre-scheduled evenings and weekends may be required due to student needs, class schedules or special events such as orientation, commencement, and club meetings. Weekend shifts and later weekday shifts are scheduled in advance (i.e. rarely is it last minute; all advisors take turns).

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's Degree or higher in student affairs, student services, or related student affairs/higher education field or comparable education or experience. Theoretical and practical knowledge in policies and procedures relating to graduate and professional students and curriculum administration, experience interpreting, explaining academic policies to reflect the department's goals and objectives.

• Academic Advising experience. Experience responding to student questions regarding academic issues, course registration, degree progression, etc. using a student focused approach via email, phone, and in person.

• Experience addressing academic performance issues with students. Experience working with students to resolve academic and personal challenges preventing academic success.

• Experience interacting with students regarding leaves of absence, withdrawal from course/program and other difficult life decisions. Experience interpreting and explaining academic polices related to course progression, grading policies, registration deadlines, drop/add rules, etc

• Experience developing action plans for student achievement in tandem with faculty.

• Experience speaking effectively and with poise before large and/or small groups of people, in public and in one on one interactions.

• Expertise with using a wide variety of complex online systems: student data systems, enrollment systems, degree/college course credit systems, shared drives. Data entry experience. Solid Word/Excel skills; experience tracking data and moving between numerous online systems to retrieve student information.

• Experience independently implementing student-oriented or advising-oriented programs and activities involving diverse groups of people. Hands-on experience planning and implementing special events such as orientation, graduation, open house tours, speakers series etc. .

• Interpersonal skills. Excellent communication skills. Rapport-building skills. Communication skills including diplomacy, tact, collaboration. Ability to verbally express a position, plan of action, evaluation or interpretation in a professional, concise, and courteous manner.

• Decision-making/analysis skills. Multi-tasking skills, prioritization skills. Time management skills.

Preferred:

• Master's degree in higher education student affairs/counseling or student services.

• In-depth knowledge of the graduate business education curriculum and the needs/goals of graduate business students.

• Experience interacting with an international audience, ideally students.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $52,100 - $87,900 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $24.95 - $42.10

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
