Essential Responsibilities The Ann Kimball Johnson Director of Education is primarily responsible for overseeing the work of the Bush Institute related to Education. The Director provides strategic development and implementation of policy, research, and thought leadership related to Literacy and the Science of Reading, Assessment and Accountability, the Laura Bush Foundation for America's Libraries, and other programmatic efforts. This position is also responsible for supporting the Managing Director in driving overall mission, strategy, and impact of the Opportunity and Democracy team (which includes Education, Pathways to Opportunity, Economic Growth, Immigration, Strengthening our Democracy, and Leadership Programs). Specific responsibilities include, but may not be limited to: Strategic Planning and Program Oversight

Essential Responsibilities The Ann Kimball Johnson Director of Education is primarily responsible for overseeing the work of the Bush Institute related to Education. Specific responsibilities include, but may not be limited to: Strategic Planning and Program Oversight
- Serve as senior subject matter expert responsible for the overall strategic direction of education.
- Provide program and policy guidance to executive leadership; brief relevant stakeholders on strategy, implementation, and impact of policy work.
- Understand both state and federal policymaking and implementation on relevant issues.
- Develop long-term and short-term strategies and operational plans and oversee all aspects of program execution.
- Lead development and implementation of annual and project-based plans; ensure alignment with organizational mission and objectives.
- Drive achievement of program outcomes that advance the Bush Institute as a thought leader on education and lead to inspire/direct action regarding our focus areas.
- Collaborate with the Bush Institute's Chief Operating Officer/Vice President to develop and oversee annual budgets that contribute to an overall culture of fiscal responsibility.
- Recruit and oversee the work of staff, fellows, and independent contractors; develop and foster team culture.
- Develop key external alliances and partnerships; sustain a robust and growing network of relevant thought leaders, stakeholders, and action partners.
- Work collaboratively with the Donor Relations team to raise general and/or program designated funds that help sustain the Bush Institute's Education policy work. Contribute to funder reporting requirements and updates.
- Represent the Bush Institute externally in publications, media, public events, and other forums.
- Contribute content for web, social media, print, and other distribution channels.
- Work collaboratively with the Communications and Events teams to develop communication strategies and events that engage target audiences and drive impact and desired outcomes.
- Complete other duties as necessary or assigned.
- A bachelor's degree in education, public policy, or a relevant field; Graduate degree and/or PhD is preferred.
- Minimum of fifteen years' experience in the field of education and public policy or a related field.
- Knowledge of United States public school policy making, leadership activities, district and school operation as well as federal, state, and local intergovernmental relations.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; proven persuasive communication skills with decision-makers a plus.
- A strong professional network of experts in the field.
- Ability to manage complex projects with multiple, diverse and national stakeholders.
- Must be able to travel domestically, up to 25% annually.
