Software Engineer, ARC Team

San Francisco, CA; St. Louis, MO; New York, NY; Washington, DC Software Engineer, ARC (Architecture, Reliability, & Compute) – Public Sector Engineering Team Scale AI is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Software Engineer to join our dynamic Public Sector Engineering team. You will build and maintain internal CLIs/tools that standardize testing, deployment, and environment management; own the model inference layer (managing networking, debugging latency, tracking pricing/usage metrics for AI models); and work with Product to build integration tests that catch issues early. Responsibilities Design and implement secure, scalable backend systems for Public Sector customers, leveraging Scale's modern cloud‑native AI infrastructure. Own services or systems and define their long‑term health goals, while also improving the health of surrounding components. Improve our high engineering standards, tooling, and processes. Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to define and execute the vision for backend solutions, ensuring they meet the unique needs of government agencies operating in secure environments. Participate actively in customer engagements, working closely with stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver innovative solutions. Contribute to the platform roadmap and product strategy for Scale AI's Public Sector business, playing a key role in shaping the future direction of our offerings. Must Have At least an active secret clearance and the ability & willingness to up‑level to TS/SCI with CI Poly. This is a requirement; candidates without a secret clearance will not be considered. Preferred & Ideal Qualifications Full‑stack development experience, including modern web frameworks, programming languages, and databases; experience delivering software to air‑gapped & isolated environments is a plus. Cloud‑native technologies – containerization (Docker), orchestration (Kubernetes), familiarity with AWS, Azure, or GCP. Security‑focused experience with Federal compliance frameworks (e.g., Cloud SRG, FedRAMP, STIG). Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills; ability to think critically and propose innovative solutions. Excellent collaboration and communication skills to work with cross‑functional teams and customers. Adaptability and learning agility; willingness to embrace new technologies and evolve based on project requirements. Support working 3‑4 days a week from the DC, SF, NYC, or STL office. Compensation & Benefits Compensation includes base salary, equity, and benefits. Pay ranges (USD): San Francisco, New York, Seattle: $184,000 – $259,440 Hawaii, Washington DC, Texas, Colorado: $165,600 – $233,496 St. Louis: $138,000 – $194,580 Benefits include comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage; retirement benefits; a learning and development stipend; generous PTO; and a commuter stipend.
