Testing Process.
The City of Rolling Meadows utilizes the National Testing Network (NTN) for entry-level Firefighter/Paramedic recruitment.
Interested applicants must:
- Complete the City of Rolling Meadows employment application.
- Complete the NTN FireTEAM examination.
- Complete the NTN video interview and personal history questionnaire (PHQ).
- Submit all required supporting documentation.
Applicants who successfully complete the testing process and meet all minimum qualifications may be invited to participate in an oral interview with the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners.
Candidates who fail to complete all testing components or submit the required documentation will no longer be considered.
Required documentation includes:
- High School diploma or GED
- Proof of U.S. Citizenship or authorization to work in the United States (US Passport, Birth Certificate, etc.)
- Valid Driver's License
- Valid CPAT and Ladder Climb Certification
- EMP-Basic or National Registry Paramedic certification at the time of application and Illinois EMT-Paramedic licensure at the time of a conditional offer of employment.
- Any additional documents required by the Board of Fire and Police Commission Rules & Regulations
Additional Application Requirements.
- $65 non-refundable NTN exam fee
- At least 20 years of age as of the application deadline but at least 21 years of age at time of hire and less than 35 years of age at time of placement on final eligibility register, unless otherwise exempt by state statute
Preference Points will be offered in the following categories:
- Veteran: 5 points for a minimum one-year active duty with honorable discharge
- Education: Up to 5 points maximum - Candidate is entitled to only ONE of the following three point allotments:
- 1 point - Associate's Degree (non-fire service related) from an accredited college or university
- 3 points - Bachelor's Degree or higher (non-fire service related) from an accredited college or university or Associate's Degree in Fire Science, Fire Service Management, Fire Service Administration, Public Safety, Emergency Management, or BFPC approved related field from an accredited college or university.
- 5 points – Bachelor's Degree or higher in Fire Science, Fire Service Management, Fire Service Administration, Public Safety, Emergency Management, or BFPC approved field from an accredited college or university.
- Paramedic: 3 points if the candidate is an IDPH licensed paramedic and 2 additional points if the candidate is a paramedic with full practice privileges in the Northwest Community EMS System as documented in a Letter of Good Standing from the system.
- Experience: 1 point for each year (up to 5 points) of full-time sworn/commissioned service with a regularly constituted fire department or fire protection district. (Third party contract paramedic or PM/FF time does not qualify)
Compensation & Benefits.
- Starting Salary: $81,073 annually
- Salary range: seven-step pay plan with a top salary of $128,978 annually

Schedule.
Firefighter/Paramedics work a 24-hour shift schedule consisting of 24 hours on duty followed by 48 hours off duty. Employees receive 13 FLSA work reduction days annually and vacation benefits beginning after one year of service, increasing based on years of service.
Essential Functions.
- Responds to fire alarms, medical emergencies, rescues and other incidents in accordance with department policies and standard operating procedures.
- Performs fire suppression activities, including deploying and operating hose lines, directing fire streams, ventilating structures, conducting search and rescue and performing salvage and overhaul operations.
- Participates in rescue operations using specialized tools and equipment, including cutting torches, power saws, hydraulic rescue tools and other devices to remove victims from hazardous situations.
- Removes victims from fire or accident scenes and provides initial care and stabilization.
- Provides advanced life support (ALS) care, including patient assessment, monitoring, treatment and stabilization in accordance with approved medical protocols.
- Administers medications, intravenous fluids and other treatments; operates medical equipment including cardiac monitors, defibrillators and airway management devices.
- Communicates patient condition, vital signs and treatment provided to receiving medical facilities via radio or telemetry.
- Prepares patients for transport and assists with safe and efficient transport to medical facilities.
- Completes all required patient care reports and medical documentation accurately and thoroughly.
- Operates fire apparatus and emergency vehicles as assigned, including positioning apparatus and ensuring safe and effective operation at emergency scenes.
- Performs driver/operator functions, including operating fire pumps, maintaining water supply and monitoring apparatus performance during incidents.
- Operates auxiliary equipment such as generators, smoke ejectors, ventilation fans and foam systems.
- Inspects, tests and maintains firefighting, rescue and EMS equipment to ensure operational readiness.
- Performs routine checks of apparatus, including pumps, hoses, tools, lights, brakes and other mechanical systems; reports deficiencies and assists with minor repairs.
- Maintains adequate inventory of medical supplies, medications, and equipment; restocks and replaces materials as needed.
- Participates in ongoing training, drills, and continuing education to maintain and enhance firefighting, rescue and EMS skills.
- Participates in company training activities and skill development exercises.
- Participates in fire prevention activities, including inspections, pre-incident planning and hazard identification in residential, commercial, industrial and institutional structures.
- Performs routine maintenance and upkeep of fire stations, grounds and equipment.
- Cleans, maintains and organizes assigned apparatus, tools and living quarters.
- Completes and maintains accurate reports and records related to emergency incidents, patient care, inspections, training and daily activities.
- Operates within the chain of command and follows orders from superior officers.
- Adheres to all department policies, procedures and safety practices.
- Promotes a safety culture through personal conduct and identification of hazards or unsafe practices.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
