Poway Swim Center Lifeguard Position
Calling all aquatic leaders who have a passion for safety, service and fun! If you are ready for the next step in your career, then we have the job for you. The Community Services Department is looking for an energetic, organized professional with excellent communication skills to join our dedicated team at the Poway Swim Center. Plans, organizes, coordinates, and provides oversight for lifeguard and instructor staff, aquatic programs and activities, and basic pool operations. Oversees and provides aquatic trainings and assists in enforcing staff and facility policies. Receives general supervision from the Recreation Area Manager or assigned supervisor. Exercises technical and functional supervision and training over staff, contract instructors, and volunteers.
Key Responsibilities
Supervises, coordinates and participates in the day-to-day operations of one or more aquatic or recreation program and/or facility. Plans, schedules, prioritizes, assigns and evaluates aquatic or recreation program work; communicates status of activities and services to appropriate personnel, working cooperatively to schedule activities and services in accordance with established and special operational priorities; instructs staff in work procedures.
Participates in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for assigned services and programs; identifies resource needs; recommends and implements policies and procedures, including standard operating procedures for assigned programs and facilities.
Assists in the recruitment and selection of staff and provides recommendations; provides supervision, training, orientation, and guidance to assigned staff; prepares weekly and daily schedules; provides input to performance evaluations.
Trains employees in work methods and relevant safety precautions.
Inspects assigned City pool facilities for maintenance needs and recommends appropriate actions; assists in developing work plans, procedures, and schedules.
Estimates costs and orders supplies and materials for programs and activities; maintains records of purchase orders; assists in developing budget figures for specified areas; assists with monitoring expenditures.
Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of the aquatic operations, activities, and community events and recommends improvements or modifications.
Plans, organizes, coordinates, implements, and evaluates a comprehensive Learn to Swim program, including coordinating swim lesson courses, assessing swim lesson participants and making recommendations on correct class placements, assigning instructors to classes, and serving as the primary contact for questions and concerns regarding swim classes and program.
Acts as a representative to clients, local residents, school districts, community groups, private businesses, and others concerning questions, problems, concerns, and activities in the provision of recreation program operations, activities, and services.
Participates in developing, monitoring, and tracking sponsorships and partner opportunities; develops sponsorship proposals; maintains contacts; develops and monitors contract agreements; and negotiates with vendors.
Performs cashiering duties; receives money and issues receipts; performs daily reconciliation of cash register.
Prepares financial and statistical reports related to grants, program participation and analysis, expenditures, and revenues.
Oversees and participates in lifeguard duties during pool hours and at all events held at the pool and administers minor first aid.
Oversees and participates in basic custodial duties and routine facility maintenance, including repairs and preventative maintenance of the deck, pool, equipment, office, and locker rooms.
Plans, oversees, coordinates, and conducts diversified recreation pool activities including parties, water oriented games, water exercise, and community events; sets up and takes down equipment for facility rentals and community events.
Develops and prepares flyers, posters, banners, and other materials for distribution to schools and the community.
Coordinates community service events, including soliciting sponsors, set up and clean up, assigning tasks, supervising staff and volunteers, and working and communicating with vendors.
Responds to complaints and requests for information; interprets and applies regulations, policies, procedures, systems, rules, and precedents in response to inquiries, concerns, and complaints from public as necessary to ensure an expedient and satisfactory resolution.
Maintains accurate records of services and activities, including recreation schedules, program participation, revenues, expenditures, accidents, vandalism, and contract programs.
Documents all incidents involving injury, behavioral problems, and/or any unusual events; communicates as appropriate to supervisor, parents, and others.
Participates in ensuring compliance with relevant health, safety, and licensing laws and guidelines; maintains and updates all records required by state and local regulatory agencies.
Monitors use of facilities by user groups to ensure a safe environment; assists in enforcing established rules of facility use and participant conduct.
Observes safe work methods and makes appropriate use of related safety equipment as required.
Responds to first aid emergencies as needed; and administers basic first aid and CPR as necessary.
Maintains attendance and punctuality that is observant of scheduled hours on a regular basis.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements/License or Certificates Required
Any combination of the following education and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this classification. Experience: Two years of lifeguarding experience, including one year of swim instructor experience. Education/Training: Equivalent to completion of the 12th grade supplemented by college-level coursework in recreation or a related field. An Associate's degree is preferred. Licenses and Certifications: A valid class C driver's license. Possess or obtain and maintain a Lifeguard Instructor Certificate within six months of hire. Possess or obtain and maintain a Water Safety Instructor Certificate within six months of hire. Possess and maintain Lifeguarding certification. Possess or obtain and maintain a First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22) Certificate or an Emergency Medical Response Certificate within one year of hire. Possess and maintain a First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Certificate. Possess or obtain and maintain Pool Operator certification within six months of hire.
Physical Demands: Must possess the ability to perform work that may involve lifting children through adults, in and out of the pool up to 150 pounds or more with assistance, pulling a cover over the pool surface with assistance, and lifting, straightening and moving pool deck furniture and equipment. Need the mobility to stand, stoop, reach, bend, climb, and swim, while in swimwear. Must be in good physical condition to stay in water for prolonged periods of time, work in the extreme heat and/or cold, and the outdoors. Vision, which may be corrected; and hearing, which must be in a normal range as measured by a standard audiogram, should be good enough to see and hear adults and children in life and/or health safety endangering situations. Must also possess the mobility to work in an office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office and duplicating equipment and cash register. Positions in this classification occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and push and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Positions in this class typically lift up to 25 pounds unless performing rescue.
Environmental Elements Employees work indoors and outdoors and are exposed to variable weather conditions. May be exposed to chlorine, acids, and other chemicals at aquatics facilities, as well as blood and body fluids when rendering first aid and CPR. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures. Working Conditions May be required to work various shifts including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays at a variety of City facilities.
