Histotechnician

The Histotechnician properly processes anatomical specimens and produces slides in preparation for the Pathologist to examine under a microscope. Duties involve logging, processing, embedding, cutting and mounting of specimens, as well as appropriately staining the slide. Effectively uses laboratory information system to label and process specimens. Works collaboratively with healthcare team, and independently while also interacting with all patients from newborn through geriatrics.

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Log in surgical specimens using LIS to accurately note patient identification, specimen source, collection method and the number of bocks made; log specimens, print labels and retrieve and edit data as needed.
• Assist the pathologist with the gross examination of surgical specimens, following Standard Precautions when handling specimens.
• Load and program tissue processor to prepare the surgical specimens for embedding, insuring that there are sufficient reagents and that they are not outdated or in need of changing.
• Embed the processed tissue samples in paraffin orienting the specimens so they will provide an acceptable slide, noting any special instructions.
• Use the microtome to section the tissue blocks using the cut that is appropriate for the specimen, i.e., serial or step section.
• Mount the section on a microscope slide insuring that any STATs, RUSHES or special requests are done first.
• Prepare staining solutions as needed making sure outdated or unsuitable stains are discarded.
• Stain tissue slides as appropriate taking into account the tissue type and fixative that was used; Prepare a variety of special stains and use control slides to determine that the stain is working properly.
• Coverslip the slides and correctly label them with the appropriate LIS generated label.
• Assist the pathologist with frozen sections by insuring the cryotome is ready, logging in the specimen and assisting as requested with sectioning, noting any special instruction such as culturing or special staining.
• Assist in the staining and cover slipping of PAP and non-GYN cytology slides.
• Files slides and blocks to ensure easy retrieval if they are needed after the case has been signed out.
• Respond to changes in the workflow as necessary to be able to accommodate STATs, special requests or changes in testing volume.
• Consistently check and record daily, all pertinent instrument temperatures (tissue processor, embedding center, refrigerators, etc.) advising the section head of any critical variation.
• Operate the tissue processor, cryotome, and microtome; clean and perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting as required.
• Use reagents, supplies and other resources in a cost effective manner; Maintain proper stocking levels as required by the histology lab. Inventory supplies and reagents recommend resupply.
• Correctly identify all specimens, surgical blocks and slides by cross referencing the patient's medical record number and demographic information.
• Carefully handle, use, and dispose of scalpel and microtome blades to prevent injuries to others and self; Safely handle chemicals and reagents, avoiding spills or unnecessary occupational exposure; Properly dispose of old tissue and reagents.
• Maintain histology lab in a neat, organized manner that facilitates job performance and minimized the risk of personal injuries.
• Review the Operating Room schedule on a daily basis and be sure the pathologist is informed about any frozen sections on the schedule, paying close attention to any that are scheduled before 9 am.
• Work with and assist student interns to gain proficiency with their assigned tasks or studies.
• Handle telephone requests for information with courtesy, accuracy, and ensure patient, hospital and physician confidentiality; receives information and distributes messages appropriately.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Professionalism and business acumen appropriate for working with guests, clients, physicians, employees and volunteers.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Basic office skills such as sorting, printing, faxing and record keeping.

Education and Experience:

• NYS SED license as a Histotechnician or Medical Lab Technician required.
• AAS degree as Histotechnician or Medical Lab Technician required.
• 2 Years experience preferred.

Working Conditions:

• Position requires department specific orientation.
• Prolonged periods of sitting and working on a computer; subject to intermittent interruptions.
• Ability to perform prolonged or extensive standing, walking, and/or traversing.
• Exposure to patient blood, urine, and other body fluid samples along with other hazardous materials.
• Requires ability to lift, move, carry, push or pull up to 30 lbs. using proper body mechanics and/or available equipment.
• Attendance ensures that job requirements are met.
• Actively participates in Quality Assurance, CQI, cross-training, in-service programs; attend all mandatory classes, meetings and committees as required; complete department-specific requirements/competencies; accept assignments to other units/shifts as hospital needs require.
• Comply with DOH requirements for annual health assessments and required immunizations.

Pay Range: $24.50-$26.50/hour

Employee salary is based on commensurate experience and other qualifications.
