Nursing Supervisor

SUMMARY

Provide leadership and coordination of all hospital departments during evening and night hours in order to facilitate the functioning of the hospital as a synergistic, harmonious, and integrated environment in which the mission, vision and values of Newport Hospital will be fulfilled. In the absence of hospital department managers and administrators, oversee the operation of all hospital departments and interpret and enforce hospital policies. Assist the nursing staff through clinical consultation, coordination of the particular nursing resources available and assist in the provision of nursing care to patients of all ages, including neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults and geriatric patients as needed. Case management when needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintains current BLS and ACLS certification. Ensures the utilization of the nursing process by all staff members. Demonstrates an understanding of nursing’s mission, vision, and values. Demonstrates an understanding of the Nursing Professional Practice Model and the role of the registered nurse in providing relationship‑based care. Makes rounds to review work activity on nursing units and serves as a resource to staff. Assists in the provision of nursing care to patients of all ages. Foresees potential problems and intervenes to offset adverse impact. Consults with admitting regarding placement of patients. Functions in the absence of case management when needed. Provides for services not available during night hours, e.g., medical records, pharmacy, and SSPD. Notifies unit/department leadership of all critical events. Collaborates with nursing management to ensure that the department’s scope of services meets the needs and expectations of internal and external customers. Creates a shared vision by continuously communicating the nursing division’s goals in alignment with the hospital’s mission. Demonstrates flexibility and innovation to improve operations and enhance revenue, effectiveness, productivity, responsiveness, and quality. Responds to and provides direction during changing workloads, crises, and emergency situations. Exhibits a confident and positive attitude with functional competency and technical credibility. Assesses manpower needs, authorizes reassignment and overtime to meet needs. Assesses employees’ competence upon hire, transfer, and annually, considering age‑specific patient needs. Communicates clear performance expectations.

KEY FUNCTIONS

Provides input to department directors for ongoing performance assessment. Recognizes staff achievements. Counsels employees proactively to sustain or improve job performance. Provides or recommends fair, objective, timely, and developmental disciplinary action. Promotes teamwork opportunities among all staff. Promotes employee participation in problem‑solving and decision‑making. Assesses competency patterns and educational needs of staff based on data. Facilitates orientation and education of nursing staff on evening/night shifts and orients new employees to divisional policies and procedures. Develops and participates in in‑service education programs for the nursing division. Serves as an instructor (when qualified) and provides training for BLS, ACLS, and other certification classes. Develops an ongoing education and training plan covering safety, competency, and continual improvement linked to department goals. Monitors staffing to maximize productivity and assists with cost containment by encouraging use of benefit time during low census periods. Ensures secure and confidential treatment of sensitive and private information. Utilizes computer technology for data generation, retrieval, analysis, and documentation. Maintains assigned physical/tangible assets safely and efficiently, prevents loss or abuse, and manages supplies effectively. Demonstrates in‑depth knowledge of department‑specific safety issues and leads safety initiatives. Continuously identifies, develops, and enforces safety policies and procedures in line with organizational policies. Assists nursing management in developing, planning, and managing quality improvement processes aligned with key functions. Participates in functional and cross‑functional continuous improvement activities. Utilizes improvement tools and identifies indicators to assess and improve systems. Monitors and evaluates results of improvement activities and integrates improvements into processes. Accepts feedback, demonstrates effective presentation, writing, and listening skills. Facilitates constructive dialogue, resolves conflicts, and collaborates with leaders to solve problems. Controls timely flow of information and keeps stakeholders informed. Plans and organizes constructive meetings and attends management and patient‑care leadership meetings.

QUALIFICATIONS

Licensure as a registered nurse in Rhode Island or under the Nurse Licensure Compact. Bachelor’s degree in nursing. Three to five years of clinical nursing experience in an acute healthcare setting with demonstrated leadership skills and clinical knowledge. Current BLS and ACLS certification.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to sit, stand, walk, bend, twist, and squat for 1‑3 hours per day, walk 3‑7 hours per day, and lift 25‑50 lbs with good body mechanics. Must use both hands and wrists, perform work with moderate deviation and fine motor skills. Far and near vision must be 20/20 with accurate depth perception; discrimination of colors; hearing whispers at 20 feet.

PAY RANGE

$43.43 – $86.87
