Head of Riding – Alford Lake Camp Seasonal | June 5 - August 18, 2025
Alford Lake Camp ( a residential girls’ camp in mid-coast Maine, provides a supportive, fun, and community-driven environment where campers and staff grow, build friendships, and challenge themselves. Our mission is to inspire confidence, resilience, and a commitment to making a positive impact.
The Head of Riding oversees the care of 10-12 horses, manages a team of 7 staff, and teaches English-style riding to campers of all levels. This role requires strong leadership, excellent communication, and a deep commitment to both horsemanship and the camp community.
Responsibilities:
- Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of the horses.
- Communicate horse health concerns to the Director and coordinate veterinary care.
- Order and manage feed, supplies, and necessary horse care.
- Train and supervise Riding staff and Stablehands.
- Assess staff skills and assign appropriate teaching roles.
- Develop lesson plans and skill-based group assignments for campers.
- Maintain clean and organized barn and riding facilities.
- Work with the Facilities Manager on repairs and maintenance.
- Community Involvement:
- Assist with serving dinner once a week.
- Eat meals with campers in the Dining Room.
- Take 1-2 night duty shifts on the tent line.
- Participate in camp-wide events like Campfire, Logs, and Beach Day.
- Qualifications:
- Certified English riding instructor (within the last two years) or documented experience teaching formal horseback riding.
- At least 4 weeks of supervisory and teaching experience at a riding facility in the last 3 years.
- Recent experience in riding supervision and instruction.
- Current First Aid & CPR certification (or willingness to obtain before start date). This role is ideal for an experienced equestrian who values leadership, teaching, and community engagement.
