POLICE OFFICER

Perform responsible protective service work involving general or support duty police assignments; work performed under regular supervision with frequent emergency situations; includes personal hazard and danger. Physical demands include exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, 10 pounds constantly; heavy work up to 100 pounds; requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching; vocal, hearing, visual acuity required; environmental conditions include extreme cold, heat, noise, vibration; may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and required to wear specialized PPE. Responsibilities Patrol town, respond to service requests, enforce laws and ordinances. Make arrests, testify in court, prepare records and files. Operate patrol vehicle or walk to observe traffic violations and suspicious activities. Respond to radio dispatches and answer calls and complaints. Operate mobile data terminal, issue citations for traffic violations, serve warrants, make arrests. Provide police escorts, direct traffic, perform residential and commercial checks. Fill out arrest records, investigate traffic accidents, prepare reports, facilitate information exchange. Report unsafe street conditions, ensure vehicle maintenance. Participate in training programs and special assignments (training officer, investigations, crime prevention, traffic enforcement, D.A.R.E., K-9, housing authority). Perform related tasks as required. Qualifications General knowledge of police methods, practices, procedures. Knowledge of city geography and important buildings. Knowledge of police department rules and regulations. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions, prepare clear reports. Ability to deal courteously and firmly with the public. Analytical skills to assess situations and adopt quick and reasonable actions. Skill in use of firearms and operation of motor vehicles. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Education and Experience Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school. Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina. Possession of BLET certification.
