The Swim Instructor is responsible for teaching swim lessons to children at least 6 months old and adults according to Kroc Center Hawaii guidelines and enforce pool and safety rules and Kroc Center Hawaii policies to maintain a safe environment and member and guest satisfaction.

The Kroc Center Hawaii Swim Instructor will have a deep commitment to the mission of The Salvation Army, which will be evident in his or her professional life and the manner in which he or she represents The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in the community.

The position requires strong organizational skills and ability to multitask. The work will be in a fast-paced environment and must maintain poise under pressure. The position must maintain a self-motivated and self-directed schedule able to take projects from beginning through completion and respond to crisis situations in a calm and effective manner. This position must possess the self-discipline necessary to perform repetitive tasks without lowering quality of work, exercise good judgment and be comfortable taking initiative with projects. This position must be able to work with limited supervision, and work in a team setting with other professionals.

The candidate chosen for this position will have the ability to remain in the water ranging from 80-90 degrees for the duration of swim lessons (1-4 hours); support child weight in the water; recognize distressed swimmers and those needing assistance and provide the necessary aid and able to communicate verbally and loudly across distances.

May also be required to run, swim, paddle and walk long distances; stand and sit for long periods; uses hand to finger, handle, feel or operate lifesaving equipment.

The position requires sitting; climbing and/or balancing; stooping, kneeling, bending, stretching, crouching and/or crawling; standing; walking; manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; use of vision; driving a vehicle; pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying 50-75 pounds and occasionally more than 75 pounds with assistance.

The ability to interact with co-workers and the public in a positive, professional manner in conformity with The Salvation Army Mission Statement. The ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and circumstances.

The employee regularly works under outdoor weather conditions, is routinely exposed to the sun, may be exposed to extreme heat; works on uneven and/or slippery surfaces and is periodically exposed to hazardous conditions/situations.

Attendance at trainings and conferences, both in Hawaii and on the mainland, may be required. Extensive travel is possible, including air travel, driving long distances, night driving, overnight travel, and extended travel of three days or more.

Kick boards, swim buoys, hand paddles, swim noodles and associated swimming toy, and moving swimming teaching platform.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate

American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification or equivalent

American Red Cross First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer
