Teacher of the Visually Impaired

Position Title Teacher of the Visually Impaired Qualifications Required: Bachelor's degree; TVI Certification; Valid Driver's License; Evidence of Insurability. Preferred: Previous experience with visually impaired students. Terms of Employment Position Type: Special Programs / Visually Impaired Employment Length: 9 months (Part Time or Full Time) Direct Report: Director of Special Programs Salary Schedule: Per approved salary schedule FLSA: Exempt Location: TBD Eligible for emergency telework with supervisor approval. Purpose The Teacher of the Visually Impaired will provide specialized instruction and services to meet the unique educational needs of students with visual impairments ages 3-21, including functional vision/learning media assessments and written reports. Essential Job Functions Provide specialized instruction and services tailored to visually impaired students. Coordinate instruction and services, collaborating with classroom teachers, parents, and other education personnel. Assist students, parents, and peers in understanding educational needs, services, and resources. Consult regularly with teachers and personnel to coordinate programs and services. Assist administrators and teachers with environmental adjustments for students. Ensure timely provision of large‑type, braille, supplementary materials, and other aids. Develop and deliver instruction in: low‑vision, visual efficiency, concept development, daily living, career/vocational, communication (braille reading and writing), social/emotional, and sensory‑motor skills as outlined in the IEP. Create sequential, meaningful lesson plans aligned with IEP goals and student needs. Provide academic support and adaptations for students with visual impairments. Conduct initial and ongoing assessment: consult assessment team for testing materials, assist with assessments, interpret results. Perform functional vision/learning media assessments and produce written reports. Attend ARD and IEP meetings for visually impaired students. Efficiently schedule time for assessment, instruction, planning, preparation, travel, and conferences. Maintain ongoing contact with parents regarding progress and future goals. Provide in‑service training to school personnel and parents on visual impairment needs and services. Distribute informational materials such as pamphlets and films to promote understanding. Coordinate with transcribers, readers, counselors, mobility specialists, vocational staff, and rehabilitation counselors. Maintain a current reference library of professional materials and resources. Stay informed about current research, development, and technology. Lift up to 50 pounds and transport supplies and equipment to multiple sites as needed. Adhere to punctual and reliable attendance expectations. Perform other duties as assigned. Required Competencies Skill‑Based Competencies – applying assessment instruments, operating occupational therapy equipment, standard office equipment, relevant computer software, and accurate records. Knowledge‑Based Competencies – age‑appropriate activities, grammar and punctuation, health standards and hazards, safety practices, stages of child development, abnormal development and medical diagnoses related to special education funding, current occupational therapy interventions, pertinent codes, policies, regulations, and laws. Ability‑Based Competencies – adapting to changing priorities, communicating with diverse groups, maintaining confidentiality, meeting deadlines, working as part of a team, handling detailed data, maintaining effective working relationships, and translating therapy data into meaningful educational activities.
