Pediatrics - Renal (Instructor)

Summary The Pediatric Critical Care Nephrology Instructor program at Baylor College of Medicine provides specialized training for graduates of Pediatric Critical Care, Pediatric Nephrology, or Perinatal/Neonatal Medicine fellowships to foster future clinical research collaboration between pediatric nephrologists, pediatric intensivists, and neonatologists and to provide additional training in extracorporeal therapies. Job Duties The instructor will round with the critical care nephrology team, carrying a suitable number of patients as the front-line clinician, participating in rounds by presenting patients and jointly forming management plans. The instructor is expected to write the daily progress/procedure and in the case of new patients, consult notes on their patients. The instructor will be supervised by the attending nephrologist and will not be expected to independently bill on these patients. Prescription of extracorporeal therapies will be performed strictly under the supervision of service attending. Similar to other renal trainees, the final orders will have to be reviewed and signed by the renal attending. The instructor will be expected to participate in team rounds for transplant patients. The instructor will join the Daily Renal Huddle that occurs in the Renal Dialysis area to participate in daily RRT procedure planning and discussion. Maintaining excellent communication between the Renal Service and the primary service/ICU service regarding recommendations is essential to ensuring high quality patient care, regardless of whether the patient is a primary or consult patient. A completed consultation note must be on the patient's medical chart before any dialysis/ Extracorporeal Liver Support is initiated. As with other renal fellows, all dialysis/ Extracorporeal Liver Support orders will be reviewed and signed by the attending physician. This includes CRRT, MARS, hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis. The instructor will be expected to gain proficiency in obtaining consent for dialysis/ Extracorporeal Liver Support prior to the initiation of treatment. In addition to a daily progress note, a daily procedure note is required for continuous dialysis modalities and for each individual treatment on day of intermittent treatments. The procedure note will be written by the instructor and attested/ co-signed by the renal attending. The instructor is expected to observe as many renal replacement/Extracorporeal therapy set up and take down whenever feasible. The procedure starts will be supervised by renal attending. If the patient volume is not adequate to support the educational needs of the learner, alternative assignments, such as rounding and patient care with the consult team, could be considered. The instructors are also expected to attend the boot camp talks on renal replacement therapies for the renal fellows in the beginning of the academic year. During the rotation, the instructor is expected to attend all educational conferences of the Renal Section. Minimum Qualifications Minimum Education: M.D. (or equivalent), ACGME Accredited Residency in Pediatrics and Fellowship in Pediatric Critical Care, Pediatric Nephrology, or Perinatal/Neonatal Medicine. Clinical rotations will vary depending on the background of the individual applicant but would be expected to include front line roles in the ICUs. Candidate must be Board Eligible or Board Certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Critical Care, Pediatric Nephrology, or Perinatal/Neonatal Medicine Minimum Certification/Licenses/Registration: Licensed by the Texas Medical Board Work Authorization Requirement: This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
