EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Active Michigan license to practice as a Registered Nurse
Bachelor of Nursing (BSN), or actively pursuing
Current CPR certification
Experience in the care of pediatric patients.
Demonstrated knowledge of community or public health preferred.
Knowledge and previous work with central lines and ostomy care preferred.
Ability to work independently and follow guidelines from the medical team.
Act as a liaison between the family, medical team, and school personnel.
Able to go on class field trips
Able to communicate well with family and school staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Heightened attention to medical nuances
Willingness to participate in high level training for specific and detailed medical procedures
Acuity to student behavioral changes which may indicate medical concerns
Ability to monitor and report on meticulous data pre-, during, and post-treatment
In-home preparation and care prior to the school day
Provide for the direct care needs of specific student, including medication administration, treatments and procedures
Update for identified persons, as appropriate, student's medical history within the school
Ensure compliance with national, state, and local requirement for school based nurses
Ensure compliance with AAPS policies, guidelines and procedures as pertaining to designated role
Provides student specific health services to strengthen and support the educational process by modifying or removing medical/health-related barriers to learning
Focus on site contamination
Provide nursing care of the assigned student with medical disabilities.
Provide nursing care to students and staff with minor and major illnesses and injuries.
Able to work as a team member with other AAPS School Nurses. When called upon/assigned, the Nurse will function as a general School Nurse by:
When legally appropriate, delegate, train and supervise non-licensed lay staff to carry out certain nursing responsibilities, (e.g. dispensing of medication in the school setting, tube feeding).
Identify and plan for students with health problems.
Act as a consultant regarding immunization records.
Evaluate and plan for the adaptation of the environment for the student with disabilities
Present or obtain/provide speakers and or materials on health education/prevention when appropriate.
Conduct special education health evaluations and attend IEPC when appropriate.
Maintain records and reports.
Demonstrate prompt and regular attendance.
Provide nursing care to students and staff with minor and major illnesses and injuries.
Able to work as a team member with other AAPS School Nurses.
Other duties may be assigned. This is a full-time position, requiring regular reliable and predictable attendance on site to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Read, analyze, and interpret general counseling periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. REASONING ABILITY:
Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Use appropriate language and accompanying techniques with adolescents on one to one bases as well as in groups. Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents; skill in oral and written communication. PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and talk or hear and sometimes walk and sit. Occasionally the employee will bend or twist at the neck more than the average person. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 50 lbs such as medical equipment, general school furniture/supplies, boxes of books and AV/VCR carts. The employee is directly responsible for safety, well-being, or work output of other people. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.

- Collaborate with school administrators and staff related to health care needs/plans.
