Senior Foundations Relations Manager (GP) Posted on March 03, 2020 Greenpeace U.S. is seeking a Senior Foundations Relations Manager to oversee and further develop the organization’s foundation relations program, with primary responsibility for cultivating fruitful, long-term relationships with private foundations to secure significant support for Greenpeace’s U.S. and global campaigns. This management position supervises the daily operations of foundation relations function, and oversees a portfolio of approximately 75 principal-level prospects and donors. The successful candidate will be capable of mastering and articulating in compelling writing complex programmatic work to funders, and have prior experience working with private foundations to secure six- and seven-figure grants.. The Senior Foundations Relations Manager will develop and lead strategy for strengthening partnerships with private foundations and securing grants, and will be an active participant in the development department’s management team. The position will report directly to the Development Director of Greenpeace Fund, and will work closely with the Executive Director, program staff and Board members. This role will: Personally manage engagement with a portfolio of up to 75 active and prospective private foundations. In collaboration with program staff and the Senior Management Team engagement will include: phone/video conversations, in-person visits, and written communications, including letters of inquiry, proposals, reports, and informal updates (created in collaboration with program staff and the Grant Specialist). Provide guidance on how to expand the universe of foundations that fund Greenpeace, nationally and internationally. A key activity will be preparing briefings for program staff and senior leadership on: (1) emerging giving trends; (2) positioning Greenpeace and key programs to match the giving priorities of foundations; (3) establishing on-going conversations about environmental issues of concern to foundations and to Greenpeace; and, (4) articulating emerging issues and programs and how foundations can partner with Greenpeace to build new capacity. Directly manage a three person team, including a Senior Foundations Relations Officer responsible for raising funds for Greenpeace U.S., a Senior International Foundations Relations Officer focused on securing support, primarily from private foundations based in the U.S., for key international campaigns, and a Grant Specialist, responsible for grant writing, and financial and deadline tracking. Responsible for assisting them in developing objectives, oversight through weekly check-ins, and quarterly performance reviews. Other supervisory skills include: hiring, feedback, scheduling, orientation and training, termination, payroll, and other administrative tasks. Develops strong and productive working relationships with leadership and program staff in order to advance fundraising and programmatic goals. Collaborate with the Development Director of Greenpeace Fund to determine annual income budget goals from foundations for both domestic and international work. Responsible for oversight of the Foundations program budget, including tracking income and expenditure disbursement; preparing monthly, quarterly, and yearly reports and financial analyses for senior leadership on progress toward financial goals. Working in collaboration with global colleagues, develop and maintain tracking systems in the Moves Management model for international fundraising efforts led by the Greenpeace U.S. foundations team. Assist the Grant Specialist in developing and maintaining tracking systems for ensuring that foundations are regularly updated on Greenpeace’s activities and achievements. Assist the Senior Stewardship Officer and program staff in developing reports and updates to foundations within the Foundation Relation Manager's portfolio. Collaborating with the Grant Specialist, facilitate the process for developing letters of inquiry, grant proposals, and proposal budgets. Assist in developing a process that provides as much lead time as possible to allow program staff to discuss and formulate objectives and deliverables. Provide guidance to program staff and senior management on how to effectively communicate the match between Greenpeace activities and foundation giving interests. Provide input on proposal narratives and budgets created by the Grant Specialist and contract writers. Provide guidance on presenting financial data to private foundations, including refining templates for proposal budgets and expenditure reports, assisting financial staff in completing complex budget and expenditure forms required by foundations, and helping revise policies and practices around developing project budgets. Provide guidance as needed on assessing and improving systems for tracking restricted revenue in order to ensure that grant spending is in compliance with grant agreements. As needed, assist the Chief Development Officer, Development Director of Greenpeace Fund and Chief Program Officer in facilitating program planning, providing guidance on how to describe campaign activities to private foundations. Mentor junior development staff and campaign experts on how to engage with foundations. Ensure that all appropriate information about cultivation activities, solicitations, and donations is entered into CRM database (Salesforce). Perform other job-related duties as requested or assigned by the Development Director of Greenpeace Fund or the Chief Development Officer. Minimum requirements include: At least seven years of proven success in foundations fundraising for advocacy related issues 3 years in a management position Must demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the conceptual terminology used by foundations to describe multi-faceted programs, including: theory of change, goals, objectives, benchmarks, inputs, outputs, outcomes, and indicators of success Experience in personally soliciting and obtaining six- and seven-figure grants and working with senior management and program staff is a must. International fundraising experience is also a plus. Familiarity with the fundamentals of accounting and financial reporting and relational databases required. Additional requirements include but not limited to: Excellent oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills Strong organizational and project management skills and team-building skills Must be creative, flexible, responsible, and able to balance a variety of activities. Ability to set priorities, travel extensively domestically and internationally, and work within deadlines. Ability to come up with creative ideas to fundraise collaboratively and build strategic relationships Must have a commitment to the environmental and peace issues central to Greenpeace’s mission.
