Overview School of Music and Dance Summary The School of Music and Dance at San José State University (SJSU) values diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Brief Description of Duties The successful candidate will teach a weeklong course focusing on historically underrepresented and marginalized composers and communities in music education. The course will unpack decolonial practices in music education, with emphasis on inquiry-based pedagogy and culturally responsive teaching. Responsibilities The successful candidate will demonstrate evidence of a commitment to equity and inclusion through their research, teaching, and/or service. They must demonstrate awareness of and experience understanding the needs of a diverse student population — in terms of age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation — through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement. Faculty shall organize all classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS). All classes must be offered and meet as scheduled throughout the semester or term, in the mode assigned and listed in the schedule of classes (asynchronous, synchronous, bichronous, in-person, or hybrid). Required Qualifications MA or MM in Music Demonstrated awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population through cross-cultural study, training, teaching, or other comparable experience. The maximum rate (listed below) is the usual salary per Weighted Teaching Unit (WTU) in Special Session. Class enrollment is not limited to 25 students and may be higher if appropriate to course type. Employment is contingent upon proof of eligibility to work in the United States. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information or if the candidate knowingly withholds or falsifies information. Appointment is contingent upon budget and enrollment considerations and subject to order of assignment provisions in the collective bargaining agreement between California State University and the California Faculty Association. These provisions state the “Order of Work,” the order in which available courses must be assigned to faculty, starting with tenure line faculty and ending with new lecturer appointees.
