Job Overview The Senior Systems Engineer has broad experience supporting and maintaining websites and web applications, maintaining database and server infrastructure, and ensuring networking and security for these systems. The role requires familiarity with Linux environments and editing/maintaining configuration files. Key Accountabilities / Essential Job Duties Respond to incidents from other sections, including help desk support. Help develop standard operating procedures, assignments, and coordinate work efforts. Assist users with computer needs, install and configure software/hardware on PCs, and troubleshoot user systems. Provision new accounts for users. Develop processes and procedures to streamline issue resolution. Provide technical support for Senate IT and telecommunications services, systems, hardware, software, and storage solutions to users and vendors. Maintain and monitor LAN/WAN and SAN operations, solve application problems, install, integrate, customize, enhance, test LAN and SAN hardware and software. Install, upgrade, customize, tune, and maintain databases for optimal performance and availability; assist in developing, testing, and implementing database store procedures, functions, triggers, views, and packages. Conduct acceptance and integration testing; assist vendor system implementation by troubleshooting related system issues affecting Senate users. Analyze, design, develop, implement, and maintain applications to meet Senate users’ needs; assist with product evaluations and implementation. Attend internal training provided by subject matter experts to understand operational tasks, document support needs, and share information within the assigned section. Other duties as assigned. Required Education High School Diploma / GED. Other Duties / Responsibilities Participate in on-site and on-call rotation. Required Work Experience Five to eight years of relevant work experience (GED), three to six years (Associate), one to three years (Bachelor’s), one to two years (Master’s). Required Special Skills / Knowledge Ability to conduct skills assessments to evaluate proficiency in key areas. Manage current storage capacity, plan for growth, ensure backups, and perform installations, patches, and upgrades. Handle escalated issues from lower‑tier team members and mentor others on solutions. Analyze new hardware and software releases for impact on the Senate environment, test releases, and develop product configuration standards. Create, develop, modify, instruct, and provide technical assistance on business continuity plans and processes. Desired Qualifications Design and maintain Disaster Recovery architecture utilizing replication over a WAN for all assigned systems. Experience using a commercial Content Delivery Network (CDN) to cache, distribute, and protect public-facing websites. Experience developing and/or running applications written in PHP, NodeJS, .NET, and Python, and scripting/developing in Bash, PERL, or JavaScript. Develop, maintain, and troubleshoot PHP‑based apps to streamline performance and enhance security. Experience with Git for source code management, including handling conflicts, rollbacks, and squashing commits. Experience maintaining a centralized image registry for containerized applications, including tagging, versioning, and pruning. Basic understanding of networking, database integration, and storage as backend systems for hosting web applications and basic debugging. Proficient level experience in any Git repository administration role. Three or more years of experience with full‑stack development (PHP and Linux preferred). In‑depth knowledge of end‑to‑end development and deployment of web applications or websites. Desired Certifications CompTIA Linux+ or similar. CompTIA Security+ or similar. Working Conditions Maintenance windows occur at night, on weekends, or on holidays; employees may be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays. Position supports essential services of the U.S. Senate and may require availability during inclement weather, holidays, and overnight sessions. In the context of government furloughs, this position is considered excepted. Security Clearance Requires a Secret U.S. Government security clearance.
