Position Description

As the Safety Director of a Construction Company, you will create a safe and healthy working environment by overseeing the safety department, developing, implementing, and monitoring company-wide safety programs, and ensuring compliance with government regulations and industry best practices. This position reports directly to the Vice President of Operations.

This role oversees functions in Los Angeles and San Diego counties.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Safety Leadership

• Advise management and develop, implement, and enforce workplace safety policies and procedures in accordance with OSHA and Cal/OSHA standards and regulations.
• Establish company-wide safety strategy, annual goals, key performance indicators (KPIs), and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Develop, implement, and maintain the Company's Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) and ensure compliance with all Cal/OSHA requirements.
• Stay current on industry safety trends, regulatory changes, and best practices.
• Present safety performance metrics, trends, and recommendations to executive leadership on a regular basis.

Safety Software and Inventory Management

• Lead the administration and continuous improvement of company safety management platforms (Novara Flex/KPA software).
• Manage safety documentation, training records, incident reports, inspections, audits, corrective actions, and regulatory compliance records.
• Oversee PPE inventory, safety equipment, and First Aid-related supplies, and maintain relationships with safety vendors and service providers.

Compliance and Risk Management

• Function as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies and assist with inspections, audits, investigations, and compliance requirements.
• Lead safety audits, investigate accidents and incidents, identify hazards and risks, and develop and implement corrective action plans.
• Create incident reports, analyze accident data and trends, and recommend corrective measures to reduce risk and improve safety performance.
• Conduct routine jobsite visits, field observations, safety audits, and executive safety reviews throughout Southern California operations.

Training and Safety Culture

• Develop, implement, and maintain safety training programs to ensure compliance, effectiveness, and relevance to current operations.
• Promote a proactive safety culture through employee engagement, education, accountability, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Establish and maintain site-specific Emergency and Disaster Response Programs.
• Develop, implement, and lead emergency response planning, procedures, and preparedness initiatives.

Workers' Compensation and Return-to-Work Programs

• Oversee workers' compensation claims management, including First Reports of Injury, claim review, return-to-work coordination, and collaboration with insurance carriers, brokers, medical providers, and legal counsel.
• Manage the Company's return-to-work and restricted-duty programs to support employee recovery and reduce claim costs.

Team Management

• Supervise, mentor, and develop safety team, including conducting performance evaluations and providing ongoing coaching.
• Collaborate closely with Executive Leadership, Superintendents, Project Management, Human Resources, and Legal teams to ensure safety policies are effectively communicated and consistently followed across all jobsites.
• Collaborate with management to develop and manage departmental budgets.
• Act as a liaison with union representatives and maintain compliance with collective bargaining agreements and applicable union requirements.

Position Requirements

Qualifications:

• 5+ years' experience managing and leading a safety team in a commercial, industrial, civil, or specialty contracting environment
• 15+ years construction experience with increasing safety leadership responsibility
• Active OSHA 30 required
• CHST required or obtained within 12 months of hire
• CSP strongly preferred
• OSHA 510 and/or 500 certification preferred
• First Aid/CPR training certification
• Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Safety Management, Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred. Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
• Exceptional knowledge of OSHA/CalOSHA, federal, state, and local regulatory compliance requirements and appropriate corrective practices
• Experience with Novara Flex/KPA or similar safety management platforms preferred
• Experience managing fleet safety programs, driver qualification files, and DOT-related compliance preferred
• Strong knowledge of bargaining agreements and thorough union environment experience
• Solid knowledge of potentially hazardous materials and practices in the workplace
• Proficient in conducting data analysis and reporting statistics
• Strong computer skills and knowledge of safety management software, Microsoft Office
• Excellent communication skills, generating professional written material and delivering effective verbal presentations
• Strong work ethic and teamwork capabilities
• Valid California driver's license
• Bilingual (Spanish) is a plus.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to walk active construction jobsites, including uneven terrain, stairs, ladders, and elevated work areas
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
• Ability to occasionally lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 lbs
• Ability to travel frequently throughout Southern California
