Sr. Director, News and Storytelling

Main Work Location: Historic Stanford Campus Schedule: Hybrid (at least 2 days per week on site) Budgeted Salary Range: The expected pay range for this position is $187,000 to $223,000 per annum. Stanford University seeks a Sr. Director, News and Storytelling to work in the Office of University Communications. In this critical role, the successful candidate will oversee a team of writers, editors and a visual team in telling the stories that make Stanford one of the world’s premier universities. Reporting to the Vice President for University Communications, the successful candidate will assign, write and edit stories for a variety of audiences and channels. The individual will work closely and collaboratively with colleagues within University Communications, especially the team responsible for content and channel strategy. The senior director must also establish strong and trusted relationships with communications partners in schools and units across campus, as well as with world-class faculty, whose research is the subject of many of the stories told by the editorial team. The ability to write and edit complex scientific research stories for a general audience is a critical skill for this position. The successful candidate must have: Deep writing and editing expertise and the ability to translate complex topics into compelling stories for a broad set of audiences. Demonstrated ability to work in a highly decentralized and matrixed environment. A deep understanding of university priorities and the ability to create an editorial strategy that mirrors those priorities. A highly collaborative work ethic. Storytelling and an integrated channel strategy are core to the work of every person in University Communications. The office does not operate in silos and teams work closely together to determine the best channel for telling a particular story. About University Communications University Communications, part of the Office of External Relations, provides leadership and support for strategic communications programs that advance Stanford's mission. The office is responsible for brand positioning and strategy; issues and reputation management; crisis communications; digital content and top-level web and social media platforms; media relations, news and storytelling; executive communications; major publications; and video production.
