Position Details


MiraCosta College is accepting applications to build a pool of instructors for possible future part-time assignments at all locations. The department chairperson or designee will review applications only if vacancies become available.

Instructors may be assigned to any campus or authorized facility. Assignments may include days, evenings, or weekends.

Applications are valid through June 30, 2027, at which time they will expire. A new posting for this pool will be posted on July 1, 2027, and those still interested will need to reapply at that time.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT:

MiraCosta College Board Policy 7800: Employee Residency requires all associate faculty employees to maintain and permanently reside in a principal place of residence in the state of California that is within two-hundred (200) road miles from the employee's regularly assigned district worksite. The purpose of the policy is to promote efficiency and continuity throughout all campus administrative functions, provide students with high quality assistance and accessibility to all academic and campus services, ensure that students receive an engaging education, and respond to emerging student needs.

Associate faculty who have a fully online assignment with the District must reside within the state of California, but may live beyond two-hundred (200) road miles from their designated District worksite without requiring the exception detailed below.

The District may consider an individual request to temporarily reside outside of the State of California or outside the 200-mile limit on a case-by-case basis, not to exceed twelve consecutive months.

About the Department


MiraCosta College believes that cultural competency with regard to ethnic, cultural, social, and economic backgrounds is an essential skill for success in today's workplace. Our faculty often collaborate on ways to integrate this competency requirement into their department's program through equity-minded teaching strategies both in and out of the classroom.

In many MiraCosta departments, desirable qualifications for their faculty include relevant work, community service, advising, extracurricular experience and/or academic preparation that demonstrates an understanding of minoritized and underrepresented students such as African American, Latinx, Pacific Islander, undocumented/mixed status, LGBTQIA+, first generation, or formerly incarcerated individuals.

Compensation


Assistant coaches are considered Associate Faculty and are paid under Article 17.3 of the Associate Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement.

$46.71 to $56.83 per hour. Initial class placement is based on education. All new associate faculty start at step 1.

To calculate pay for assistant coaching assignments use the following formula:

Hourly Pay Rate x # of Hours Worked = Total Pay

All degrees and units used to satisfy the minimum qualifications must be from postsecondary institutions accredited by an accreditation agency recognized by either the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Postsecondary Accreditation. If your degree/coursework is from a college or university anywhere outside of the United States, you must submit a detailed evaluation from a professional evaluation agency. A partial list of agencies can be found at . Transcripts or translations in English still require the evaluation to show the U.S. equivalence of your degree.

b. If needed to meet the minimum qualifications, a copy (front and back) of your fully satisfied, lifetime California Community College credential authorizing service in the appropriate discipline.

Minimum Qualifications

An associate degree from an accredited institution and six (6) years of relevant coaching or athletic experience,

OR

A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and two (2) years of relevant coaching or athletic experience.

AND have sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Desirable Qualifications

Basic Function


Under the direction of the Athletic Director, the Assistant Coach supports the development and success of student-athletes by assisting in the planning and execution of team practices, recruitment, game preparation, and student engagement. This position is part of the Associate Faculty and contributes to the educational mission of the college through mentorship, leadership, and support of student-athletes.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities


The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.

1. Assist with the planning and facilitation of daily practices, drills, and conditioning sessions.

2. Support recruitment efforts during the season and off-season, including outreach, evaluation, and communication with prospective student-athletes.

3. Analyze game film, assist with game planning, and scout opponents to support competitive performance.

4. Build and maintain strong, supportive relationships with student-athletes to foster academic and athletic success.

5. Assist with pre-game, in-game, and post-game routines, including warm-ups, strategy discussions, and equipment management.

6. Attend annual compliance meetings and adhere to all district, conference, and CCCAA regulations.

7. Explain the concepts, principles, and strategies of the sport to student-athletes to enhance understanding and performance.

8. Prepare materials and equipment for use in practices and games.

9. Ensure safety procedures are followed during all athletic activities.

10. Assist in evaluating the competence and proficiency of student-athletes and provide relevant feedback to the coaching staff.

11. Provide prompt feedback on student assignments; evaluate student performance fairly and consistently; assign grades and maintain course/student records in accordance with district standards, policies and procedures; submit and post grades and submit other records following appropriate procedures by established deadlines.

12. Be available to students by telephone, email, course learning management system, or personal conference to answer questions and provide encouragement and assistance in completing course assignments and projects; meet scheduled meeting and office hours as established for assigned courses; maintain a flexible schedule to meet student needs; refer students to other faculty or campus resources to resolve problems/issues beyond the purview of faculty.

13. Maintain the confidentiality of student information.

14. Contribute to maintaining a collegial environment and collaborate with department chairs and other faculty to participate in developing policies, standards, curricula changes and other matters; demonstrate willingness to substitute for other faculty when needed to meet college or student needs.

15. Play an active role in campus life; attend faculty and staff meetings; participate in activities that contribute to the educational goals of the college and its constituents; serve on campus committees or task forces.

16. Meet professional responsibilities in accordance with contractual obligations.

Other Duties


1. Stay current in academic or program discipline, including maintaining licensure, certification or continuing education requirements where appropriate.

2. Operate a college van to transport student-athletes, coaches, or equipment as assigned.

3. Perform related duties as assigned.

7. Instructional and tutorial techniques and methods applicable to a diverse range of students including those with physical, emotional and learning disabilities.

8. District organization, operations, policies and objectives, and resources available to support student success.

9. Safety policies and safe work practices applicable to the work.

Physical Effort


The physical efforts described here are representative of those that must be met by employees to successfully perform the essential functions of this class. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

This role requires frequent physical activity including standing, walking, running, bending, and stooping during practices and games. Occasional lifting and carrying of athletic equipment weighing up to 50 pounds is expected. The position also involves operating a vehicle to transport student-athletes and equipment. Ability to work at a computer for administrative tasks is also required.

Emotional Effort


Ability to develop and maintain positive and effective working relationships with student-athletes, coaching staff, and college personnel from diverse backgrounds. Must be able to manage multiple responsibilities under pressure, including game preparation, recruitment, and student support, while meeting deadlines and adapting to changing priorities. A high level of emotional intelligence and resilience is essential for mentoring student-athletes and fostering a supportive team environment.

Working Conditions


Work is performed in a variety of settings including athletic fields, gymnasiums, weight rooms, and office environments. This role involves frequent public contact and may include exposure to emotionally charged situations during competitions. The position requires a flexible schedule with regular evening and weekend hours, as well as occasional travel for games, recruitment, and training events.
