The West Haven Community House is currently seeking to hire a passionate Full-time Assistant Teacher to work with the inspiring young minds in our Early Learning Center program. ASSISTANT TEACHER, CYS EARLY LEARNING CENTER

REPORTS TO: Head Teacher

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Works as a team with the Head Teacher to implement OEC standards related to the operation of the classroom. In addition, ensures that the classroom adheres to other applicable standards. Follows program protocol for holistic delivery of services to children and families.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Prefer an associate’s degree in early childhood education or field related to early childhood education and a minimum of two years’ teaching/coaching experience in a social service/school setting.

• Have and maintain a current CPR/First Aid Certificate and Medication Administration Training, and Epi Pen Certification, which meets State of Connecticut Licensing requirements. Also, must be approved through BCIS ( background Check and Fingerprints through Office of Early Childhood). A Health Assessment at time of employment.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

• Must be physically able to perform the duties of the position which may require lifting unspecified weights, standing, bending, use of hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; transferring individuals, stretching, walking, pushing, and/or pulling.
• Must be able to walk frequently; occasionally sit, climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and taste or smell.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, follow instructions and procedure manuals.
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
• Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

CLASSROOM SUPPORT & INSTRUCTION

• Support classroom leadership in the Head Teacher’s absence and help set a professional, caring tone.
• Work collaboratively with co-teachers, teacher aides, interns, parents, and volunteers by sharing early childhood principles and OEC Standards.
• Understand the Head Teacher role and assist in implementing developmentally appropriate principles through daily activities that meet the emotional, physical, intellectual, and social needs of individuals and groups—incorporating SEL, STEAM, multicultural, literacy, and Service-Learning activities.
• Actively Assists Head Teacher in curriculum planning and prepare daily program activities based on the intellectual, physical, emotional, and social needs of each child.
• Ensure students have the opportunity to select their own activities from a variety of open centers.
• Enlist children's cooperation and encourage active participation in all scheduled activities.
• Assist with creating and maintaining classroom environments that offer choices and variety appropriate to children’s developmental potential.
• Be a positive role model in attitude, behavior, and language.

• Assist children in developing self-control, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills.
• Use appropriate and positive discipline, ensuring it is consistent and aligns with program guidelines.
• Observe and document significant individual or group behavior using Kindertales, report unusual incidents or accidents to the Head Teacher.
• Collaborate with the teaching team on child assessments, maintaining accurate and complete documentation, including lesson plans, individual goals, observations, and evaluations as assigned.
• Be attentive to children’s special needs, allergies, restrictions, and care plans, diligently follow and enforce them to ensure child wellbeing.
• Be very aware of the health & behavioral needs of all children & support their care consistently & safely.
• Maintain responsibility for the health, safety, and visual supervision of children at all times during program hours.
• Ensure the physical environment aligns with all licensing, health, and safety standards.
• Enforce safety practices and intervene in a positive manner when children may injure themselves or each other.
• Supervise children’s activities and consult with the Head Teacher when scheduling changes or parent/school personnel meetings are necessary.
• Assist with maintaining a clean and orderly environment; report and remove (when possible) potential hazards.
• Practice universal precautions consistently and support a safe learning environment at all times.
• Be familiar with and support implementation of all State/WHCH regulations, routines, policies, and procedures.
• Assist the Head Teacher with ensuring compliance with OEC and BCIS Registries.
• Maintain confidentiality in accordance with agency policy and program guidelines.
• Adhere to all policies and procedures outlined in the CYS Staff Handbook and uphold the Agency Code of Ethical Conduct.
• Assist with daily documentation tasks including attendance and program records; ensure accurate and timely completion of required programming and paperwork.
• Coordinate with CYS Community Preschool staff to integrate comprehensive services and ensure smooth transitions for children entering, exiting, or moving within the program.
• Attend and contribute to team-based meetings, including internal case management, to support interventions and service delivery for children and families.
• Share relevant information with supervisors and team members to support service coordination and family engagement.

• Conduct yourself in accordance with the Agency Code of Ethical Conduct and foster respectful, professional, gossip-free relationships with colleagues, families, and community partners.
• Maintain strict confidentiality of all children, family, staff, and program information.
• Immediately report any suspected incidents of child abuse or neglect to your immediate supervisor and Director; follow required DCF hotline reporting protocols.
• Participate in monthly staff development activities, workshops, planning/training meetings, and all required agency meetings and consultations.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
