Anesthesia and Pain Management at SSVM The Anesthesia and Pain Management Service provides comprehensive perioperative care for companion animals and exotic patients while supporting SSVM’s mission to develop confident, practice-ready veterinarians. The service is designed to: Deliver individualized, evidence-based anesthetic and analgesic care Provide preanesthetic evaluation, anesthetic planning, advanced monitoring, and postanesthetic management Support acute and chronic pain management using multimodal approaches Collaborate closely with surgical, dental, diagnostic imaging, and other clinical services Promote patient safety through standardized protocols, quality improvement, and thoughtful case review Provide outstanding clinical learning experiences for students and trainees Advance clinical scholarship and innovation in veterinary anesthesia and analgesia The Anesthesia and Pain Management Service is supported by: Experienced veterinary technicians and clinical support staff Advanced anesthesia delivery and patient-monitoring equipment Multidisciplinary specialty consultation On‑site pharmacy services Clinical pathology and advanced diagnostic imaging support A collaborative hospital team committed to patient safety and continuous improvement The successful candidate will have opportunities to contribute to continued clinical growth, educational programming, protocol development, and advancement of anesthesia and pain management within an innovative academic environment. Key Responsibilities Provide comprehensive anesthesia, analgesia, and perioperative care for patients across hospital services Perform preanesthetic evaluations, develop individualized anesthetic plans, and oversee advanced physiologic monitoring and recovery Provide consultation for acute and chronic pain management Support anesthetic care for routine, complex, and high‑risk procedures Collaborate with primary care and specialty clinicians to provide integrated patient care Develop, implement, and evaluate anesthesia, analgesia, patient‑safety, and perioperative protocols Participate in clinical teaching and mentorship of veterinary students, interns, residents, and veterinary technology students Contribute to anesthesia curriculum development, simulation, clinical skills instruction, and assessment Support the professional development and clinical training of veterinary technicians and other hospital colleagues Participate in quality improvement initiatives, morbidity and mortality review, and service development Engage in scholarly activity or clinical research consistent with individual interests Contribute positively to a collaborative and supportive hospital culture Required Qualifications Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree Completion of a veterinary anesthesia and analgesia residency or comparable specialty training program Board certification or board eligibility through the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia (ACVAA) or equivalent Eligibility for veterinary licensure in New Jersey Demonstrated expertise in veterinary anesthesia, analgesia, and perioperative patient management Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate within a multidisciplinary specialty hospital Strong interest in clinical teaching and mentorship Preferred Qualifications Previous teaching, mentoring, or academic experience Experience managing complex or high‑risk anesthesia cases Interest in anesthesia and analgesia education, simulation, or clinical skills instruction Interest in clinical research or scholarly activityExperience developing clinical protocols, patient‑safety programs, or quality improvement initiatives Interest in advancing academic specialty practice within a collaborative environment Salary and Benefits In accordance with the New Jersey Pay Transparency Act, the anticipated salary range for this position is $150,000–$200,000 annually , commensurate with qualifications, experience, clinical expertise, academic rank, appointment track, and appointment percentage. Final salary will be determined at the time of offer.
