The Town of Falmouth seeks a dependable and safety-conscious individual to join the Parks and Forestry Division of our Department of Public Works as a full-time Forestry Maintenance Worker. This position helps protect and maintain Town-owned trees, parks, recreation areas, school grounds, cemeteries, and other public spaces throughout the community.

This is a full-time, year-round, benefit-eligible position that works 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Overtime opportunities are available for weather-related operations, emergency response, and other operational needs, and overtime worked between midnight and 7:00 a.m. is paid at double time. In addition, the Town provides opportunities to obtain additional licenses and participate in professional development that supports career advancement within the DPW.

Under the direction of the Forestry and Tree Care Supervisor, the Forestry Maintenance Worker performs skilled manual work involving tree care, landscape maintenance, general public works projects, and the operation of vehicles and specialized equipment. Key responsibilities include:

• Pruning, planting, transplanting, and removing trees and branches to promote tree health and address potential hazards;
• Assisting with specialized tree-care activities and treatments for insect and disease control;
• Operating bucket trucks, woodchippers, stump grinders, power saws, air compressors, jackhammers, and other vehicles, tools, and equipment used in forestry and public works operations;
• Maintaining parks, athletic fields, playgrounds, tennis courts, school grounds, cemeteries, lawns, landscaping, fences, benches, irrigation systems, and other Town property; and
• Performing snow and ice control, emergency repairs, excavation and backfilling, equipment maintenance, and other public works construction and maintenance activities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of one (1) year of experience in tree maintenance or public works construction and maintenance activities; or an equivalent combination of education, training, or experience that demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.

The successful candidate should have knowledge of arboriculture and tree-care methods, public works construction and maintenance practices, and safety precautions associated with heavy equipment and power tools. Knowledge of tree diseases, insect-control methods, and equipment maintenance is also desirable.

A Massachusetts Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL-B) with authorization to operate air-brake-equipped vehicles and a Massachusetts 2A Hoisting Engineer License are required for the full performance of the position. The Town will consider strong candidates who do not currently possess these licenses and provide them with training and support to obtain both licenses within six months of hire, including participation in the Town’s in-house CDL training program. The successful candidate must also obtain OSHA-10 certification within six months of hire and pass a pre-employment physical examination and drug screening.

The work requires heavy physical effort, including frequently lifting or moving materials weighing up to 100 pounds. Employees work around trees, aerial equipment, electrical lines, construction sites, trenches, moving equipment, hazardous materials, and vehicular traffic. They must be able to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions and may also be required to work in confined spaces if appropriately trained and assigned.

Expected Starting Hourly Rate: Step 1 ($26.51/hour) to Step 3 ($28.67/hour), commensurate with qualifications and experience, with eligibility for annual advancement up to Step 9.
