Description: The Radiation Therapist is responsible for the administration of ionizing radiation for therapeutic purposes in accordance with the prescription of the radiation oncologist. The therapist is accountable for the simulation of patients in preparation for radiation therapy. Basic patient care and education are key responsibilities. The therapist checks the prescription, diagnosis, chart, and patient identification. Procedures are explained to patients, reinforcing the instructions regarding reactions to the treatment and their care. The therapist prepares the room and equipment for the patient according to the prescription, including immobilization devices, blocks, and field sizes. Patients are transferred as needed. Verification of the treatment modalities and beam energy in the treatment chart is critical, noting any prescribed adjustments. The therapist documents treatment modalities, cumulative dose, site-specific doses, treatment parameters, instructions, diagrams, photos, and all billing information. Treatment simulations and all required procedures are performed, including cerrobend block fabrication. X-rays and port films are developed as needed, and filing is completed as necessary. The therapist observes and inquires about any unusual reactions or events from the patient. Maintaining order and cleanliness of the unit is an essential duty, along with maintaining appropriate stock levels. Daily, progress, and discharge documentation is completed according to departmental standards. Accurate documentation of productivity information is required. Participation in quality and patient safety initiatives is expected. Identifying potential areas for improvement in processes to enhance patient satisfaction is crucial. Potential safety hazards that may affect patients or staff must be identified and addressed. Documentation of patient care plans, tests, and examination results in the medical record is expected. Non-routine issues, questions, and concerns must be escalated to the appropriate manager or healthcare provider. Ensuring safety checklists and quality controls are completed as required is essential. The therapist promotes the mission, vision, and values of the organization and abides by service behavior standards. Other duties as assigned may also be required.
