Principal AI/ML Engineer

Abbott seeks a Principal AI/ML Engineer to design and build the AI layer for Lingo, a health platform that delivers personalized insights from continuous glucose sensor data. This hands-on, founding role requires technical leadership in agentic and LLM-based systems with strong expertise in safety, regulatory compliance, and cloud-native architecture.
Responsibilities
- Define technical vision and architecture for agentic and LLM-based features across cloud and device
- Design and build agents combining glucose history, predictions, meals, activity, and context to deliver actionable insights
- Establish guardrails ensuring agent responses comply with approved product and regulatory claims
- Build evaluation frameworks with clinically grounded test sets covering accuracy, safety, and user impact
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to AI engineering team; lead architecture reviews
Requirements
- Ph.D. or master's degree in computer science, machine learning, or related field
- 10+ years software or ML engineering experience; 3+ years building LLM-based or agentic systems in production
- Deep expertise with agent frameworks, tool calling, RAG, and AI evaluation methods
- Proven experience designing guardrails, safety controls, and evaluation pipelines for user-facing AI
- Strong Python proficiency and hands-on experience with Azure, AWS, or GCP
- Demonstrated technical leadership setting architecture and standards across teams
- Excellent communication skills explaining AI risk and trade-offs to non-technical audiences
Compensation: $130,700–$261,300 base
