Lead Dental Assistant

Job Summary Responsible for assisting the dentist(s) and dental hygienist(s) in the direct provision of primary care dental services to patients of the center. The Lead Dental Assistant also manages sterilization, preparation, and inventory control of dental instruments and supplies. Work Schedule Demands The position is full‑time, 38 hours per week. 4‑day work week. Occasional unscheduled overtime may be required in the event of vacation time or short staffing. Must be flexible with schedule to accommodate the client population. Requirements High school diploma or GED certificate. Completion of an accredited dental assisting course. CDA certification. Effective oral and written communication skills in English are required. Effective oral communication skills in Spanish preferred. Current CPR (BLS) certification required. Provide and maintain all required immunizations and/or vaccinations. Complete all required background checks. Key Responsibilities Train dental assistants on treatment plans and ensure proper entry. Assign dental assistants to providers. Ensure patient flow is efficient. Assist the Dental Administrator in providing coverage when a dental assistant is absent. Take initiative to ensure the clinic runs smoothly. Ensure all equipment is functioning correctly and is properly maintained. Provide input for annual staff evaluations. Assist patients with minor difficulties, answer questions, and give directions as authorized. Serve as chair‑side assistant for dentist or hygienist. Prepare operatory for patient treatment per protocols. Expose and develop dental radiographs in accordance with state regulations. Ensure sterility of all reusable instruments and equipment. Maintain department equipment per manufacturer’s directions and policy. Maintain department areas in compliance with infection control, exposure control, and safety protocols. Maintain adequate operatory supplies and compile inventory lists for ordering. Maintain patient records, monitor flow, and assist in proper documentation. Pull and file patient charts as required. Receive and place necessary telephone calls consistent with professional matters. Assist with various clinical and administrative functions as appropriate. Ensure proper disposal of contaminated materials. Perform all functions in compliance with the exposure control plan and protocols. Participate in health promotion and disease prevention activities, both on‑site and off‑site. Travel when necessary to meet operational needs. Perform other related tasks as directed by a supervisor. Attend to multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize assignments to ensure compliance with deadlines. Other duties as assigned. Additional Skills and Abilities Comprehensive knowledge of dental assisting techniques and procedures for all phases of general dentistry. Knowledge of modern dental materials, their storage, handling, and applications. Empathy and professionalism in responding to patient concerns. Ability to work with a diverse population of social, ethnic, and economic backgrounds. Creative collaboration with other health care professionals to achieve maximal patient outcomes.
