Unit D2 Clinical Charge Nurse - Registered Nurse III

Unit D2 Clinical Charge Nurse – Registered Nurse III (2600042Q) The Department of Public Health/Tewksbury Hospital is seeking professional and dedicated Registered Nurse III’s to serve in a permanent charge position on the patient care unit. They will provide primary nursing care to adult patients, establish nursing plans, participate as members of interdisciplinary teams, assess health care and educational needs of patients and families, and assist with admissions and discharges. Schedule Unit: D2 Shift: 1st Shift - 6:45 am to 3:15 pm. Days off are every other weekend and rotate during the week. Mandatory overtime is required. Duties and Responsibilities Provides nursing care for patients by following professional hospital and departmental standards to maintain quality care. Identifies and addresses patient needs by performing nursing assessments, developing interventions, and participating in team meetings to facilitate discharge. Assumes charge nurse responsibility on a daily basis to provide continuity of care. Collaborates with Nurse Manager in supervision and evaluation of personnel. Supervises employees of a lesser grade by assigning tasks, evaluating performance, and making performance recommendations to maintain high quality care. Provides instruction to other nursing staff by example and explanation to ensure quality services and maintain professional nursing standards. Facilitates implementation of treatment plans by the interdisciplinary team by conferring with appropriate health‑care professionals to meet stated goals for each patient. Admits, transfers, and discharges patients, coordinating health‑care services to ensure continuity of care following hospital policy standards. Identifies, evaluates, and responds to changes in patient conditions, documenting and reporting such changes to appropriate persons to ensure prompt response to patient needs. Participates in inter‑shift reports, meetings, and nursing rounds at the beginning and end of each shift to assess health‑care status, outcomes of nursing care, appropriateness of interventions, patient satisfaction, completion of unit assignments, and adherence to environmental safety and infection‑control policies and procedures. Collaborates with patient’s interdisciplinary team in multidisciplinary meetings and rounds to communicate pertinent patient care information with other health‑care professionals and integrate appropriate information into the nursing process and administrative aspects of care to ensure quality care consistent with multidisciplinary plans and standards for patient advocacy. Assures that education and training needs of patients and families are assessed and identified so families gain knowledge and skills that improve patient health‑care outcomes and meet ongoing needs. Observes interactions between patients and personnel to supervise nursing intervention and monitors and reviews documentation of nursing process to determine conformity with standards of professional practice, department policies, procedures, and governmental regulations. Functions as a mentor to advance clinical, educational, and professional development of supervised staff through clinical assignments, continuing education and staff development programs, committee membership and participation, and fostering an educational environment that develops staff to their highest potential in the clinical setting. Cooperates and collaborates with the Nurse Manager in unit‑based performance improvement to formulate a unit‑based PI plan addressing aspects of care per the department PI plan and identifying opportunities for evaluation and improvement in care. Directs and assists staff in the PI process by providing assistance with data collection and analysis, identifying opportunities for evaluation and improvement, participating in assessment of findings and corrective actions, and assessing and maintaining the effect of improvement activities. Collaborates with Nurse Manager and Staff Development to develop an orientation program that conforms to individualized needs of orientees and meets competency requirements. Assumes responsibility for personal development and competency to maintain knowledge and skills current with research, licensure, CPR, and other required skills for care specific to the unit. Demonstrates competence in assessing and providing age‑appropriate care to all clients. Demonstrates competence in assessing and providing care that is cognizant of and sensitive to patients’ cultural and spiritual needs. Required Qualifications Willingness to work with emotionally disturbed, mentally or physically handicapped patients. Ability to collaborate and communicate through oral and written reporting to providers, nursing personnel, and interdisciplinary team members. Ability to remain calm, make decisions, and act quickly in stressful and emergency situations. Ability to establish rapport and deal tactfully with people from varied ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Capacity to coordinate the efforts of others to accomplish work objectives. Knowledge of principles and practices of supervision. Knowledge of methods used in employee performance reviews. First consideration will be given to applicants who apply within the first 14 days. Minimum Entrance Requirements Applicants must have at least one year of full‑time or equivalent part‑time experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic, or medical facility, and six months of which must have been in a supervisory, administrative, or managerial capacity. Special Requirements for All Levels in Series Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing. Recent graduates from an approved nursing school must have applied for the first available RN examination. Sorbit for assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator’s license may be required.
