Director, Software Engineering

Element Biosciences seeks a Director of Software Engineering to lead a full-stack team building software for multi-omic instruments and platforms. This hands-on role balances individual contribution (60%) with team leadership and mentorship (40%), requiring expertise across frontend, backend, cloud, and instrument software.

Responsibilities

• Lead, mentor, and grow a team spanning frontend, backend, cloud, and instrument software engineers
• Set technical direction, define priorities, and align team execution with product roadmaps
• Own hiring, performance management, career development, and budget for the team
• Contribute hands-on code across the stack and drive architecture for customer-facing and internal products
• Champion adoption of agentic SDLC practices and AI tooling across the team and broader software organization

Requirements

• Senior technical leader with shipped production-grade software across full stack
• Proven track record building and growing high-performing engineering teams
• Experience with frontend (React), backend (Go), AWS cloud services, and instrument software
• Comfortable with design controls, validation, and regulated software environments
• Proficiency with AI development tools (Cursor, Claude) and agentic SDLC workflows
• Strong architectural thinking and ability to mentor on code quality and observability
